I know that Mormons do baptisms for the dead as well as endowments and marriages. My question is this: If your parents were not legally married but lived together their whole adult life, could you still do temple work for them? What are the restrictions on this?

They can still be sealed. I had a friend that had a common-law husband who died many years before she joined the church. She requested permission to be sealed. It was granted on the condition that she would be sealed after she died. The restriction was based on not sealing living people to those to whom they are not legally wed.

When names are submitted to the temple, there is no documentation such as a marriage license. It is quite probable that some families taken from various records were not legally married.

Yes, you can perform their temple work for them, their endowment, not sure about the marriage sealing part because they were not legally married but had probably a common-law marriage...if of course you are worthy and have your own endowment...if not, you can ask a worthy member to perform those ordinances for them. They must have been deceased for at least one year before their work is done also...
Just so you know, and others maybe who read this, once a deceased person's ordinances are performed for them, their names are not added to the membership of the church... there is never a "forced" membership on the deceased. We perform the ordinances for those who have not, because quite frankly, they cannot do it themselves after they have died. It is then their choice whether or not to accept those ordinances, they are not "automatically" Mormon.

What a great question I couldn't say for sure But I know as individuals the work could be done. Then could summit the papers to the first presedncy of the chuch and then they could decide if the parents could be sealed as a couple.
For a child to be sealed they would have to show that they were either born or adopted to these parents. We figure God will sort out the rest with the couple.

I don't know. I would be wary of answers given here if you are looking for a real answer. A lot of people just put what they think and it has nothing to do with the mormon religion at all. If you know any mormons you can ask them and I'm sure they would tell you. :)

It's a good question.... I've been to the temple, but never saw this issue discussed. My guess would be they could be baptised and confirmed, but not sealed...
