Southern Baptist Convention is a subset of Baptist. Baptists vary from liberal/moderate American Baptist to Calvinist Reformed Baptist and there are so many types of Independent Baptist.
Baptists,who practice Believer's Baptism of only those who can make a conscious profession of faith in Christ, have the local congregation as the ultimate unit which can join or leave larger groupings.
The Southern Baptist Convention is a conservative "fundamentalistic' denomination that resulted from a break with the Northern Baptists during the American Civil War. They are the largest Baptist and Protestant denomination in the Us.

Basically, Southern Baptists didn't think it was proper form to break bread at the Lord's Table with "Negroes".

Baptist churches are characterized in part by the independence of local churches and the first national Baptist organization wasn’t created until 1814.

Yep!! The Southern Baptist Convention was established in Augusta, Georgia, in order to preserve a religious foundation for human slavery.

Today the Southern Baptist Convention is the largest organization of Baptist churches in the world and the largest Protestant denomination in America.

Yes, the Southern Baptists broke off because they believed in the right to own slaves. This was recanted in the 1990s.
