"Can i get a tax return?"
Yes.
"do i have to file a tax return and what if i am a dependent on my dad's salary?"
No. But I am sure you can use your refund some where. Just remember you can not claim yourself. Your dad claim you.

You can file your taxes for free:

The Free File program is a free federal tax preparation and electronic filing program for eligible taxpayers developed through a partnership between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Free File Alliance LLC, a group of private sector tax software companies. Since Free File’s debut in 2003, more than 15.4 million returns have been prepared and e-filed through the program. Free File allows taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $52,000 or less in 2006 to e-file their federal tax returns for free. That means 70 percent of all taxpayers – 95 million taxpayers – can take advantage of the Free File program.

If you're making under $3000 a year but having income taxes deducted, then file a tax return and you should get back any federal income tax that you paid in. Also file a state return. Whether you get everything back from the state will depend on where you live, since state laws differ, but it's very possible that you will.

You won't get back the money that was deducted for social security and medicare.

Your income is low enough that at least for federal, being a dependent isn't going to matter. Be sure to check the box on your return that says you are a dependent, though, or you and your dad will both end up with some extra paperwork to straighten it out.

Yes, you can file. Your dad will list you as a dependent and on your tax form it will ask if you can be a dependent on someone elses taxes. You put yes. Generally you will recieve all monies paid into state and federal. I know this because I had to do the same thing with my daughters taxes this year. She is also 17.

The answers seem to be fine, for the most part. Although you may not have to file a return with the Federal Government check to make sure you dont' have to file a return with your state.

The laws are different and you should not automatically assume, anyone that just because revenue does not require you to file a return at a certain income level, some states may require.

Check with your State Tax Division if you are unsure and are sure you don't have to file with Revenue. Their site is IRS.GOV.

You can visit our site for a list of all the state tax links as well. If you don't believe you will owe taxes and get them back anyway and wont' be required to file for example, perhaps you should ask your employer or see about changing your withholding amount from Single 1 or 0, whatever you may be claiming to Single 9 for example. Single 9 for the most part until you meet certain income levels will be the same as filing exempt status. In such case exempt filing W4's are by law required to be sent to IRS but Single 9 though more or less still pretty much the same do not have to be sent to Revenue.

The common rule of thumb is you should claim how many exemptions you actually do have; such as person is single no kids, single 0 or 1. Single with two kids, single 2, and the list goes on. Whatever works for your particular situation or others may not work for everyone else.

In our professional opinions, if you do not think you will owe taxes anyway, or even be required to file, why even bother to withhold at all? Why bother to withhold the tax be required to file a return wen you can just get it during the year? In your case, you would not be qualified at your age for Earned Income Credit and if you dont' have a child I wouldnt' worry to much about it unless income gets to be a certain stage. If you believe it would, well, just file a new W4 and change it to what best suits your situation.

Just make sure when changing W4's that you ensure you don't owe, or expect to owe taxes at end of year. For 2006 for example, standard deduction for Single filers was a little more than $5k so I would not really worry too much for anything below that. But again, check with state what do they require the income to be before you do have to file.

Talk to your employer and the payroll departments, they will be happy to change the exemptions for you. Even so, under the law, I know this as we do payroll, if you give them a new W4 they must accept it. Anytime during the year. You can download it from IRS site as well. IRS.GOV.

Hope this helps you out. Again, like with most tax law, don't ever assume anything. Check with both IRS and State tax agencies before you decide that you may not have to file. The responders are correct and we do it a lot. Parents normally claim the children and when they do you file return as Single but you do not claim yourself as an exemption which was $3,300 in 2006. Parents may get earned income credit in some cases or extra child tax credits and be more beneficial to them to claim the dependent. However, we have seen cases also where it is not. Like I always state, every situation differs. Good luck. Wayne.

To close Feds would give you all the money back, your standard deduction of over 5k is more than your income. Aka there would be a 0 for your taxable income.

Most states that we are aware of would not require you to file, but don't take it from us Internet roomies. Check with your state. Again, you can find links on our site for all of them and check on status of refunds and otherwise for both state and federal agencies.

You are not required to file, it's your choice. If you do file, you will likely get all of the money back you paid in. It will be very simple for you to file, just get your dad to help you with the paperwork.
