GM is going through financial problems right now due to pensions from retired employees which cuts back spending on future products and developments and forces them to use what sources and materials are available to them at low cost. It doesn't mean the cars are crap, but many people think because GM is losing money, it must mean their cars are un reliable, which isn't the case, and is the only reason Toyota is catching up on the #1 spot. As soon as all the pensions are dealt with they will regain #1 as soon as Toyota will have the same problem in the future and there will be no looking back.

and may I ask, how many Japanese cars do you see on Barrett-Jackson selling for 6 and 7 figure amounts, and how many millions of dollars are aftermarket companies making on people restoring their old musclecars and hot rods? Japanese and European cars just are not comparable to the devotion people have to their American made cars.

Which cars are good? And for HOW long? Here's the problem with American cars - they're made to "planned obsolescence" standards. Meaning that usually, a car will need expensive work by 100,000 miles. Honda and Toyota cars will still be breaking in at that mileage, transmissions will last way beyond that, not American transmissions. Getting 200 or 300k out of them is no problem. Now for the BEST part - if your American car has 100k on it, it's headed for big problems. Honda, Toyota, no biggie. So, resale value is in the dump for American, yet people still pay thou$and$ for a used Honda or Toyota with over 100k on it. Why? Because they LAST. And therefore have higher resale value. American manufacturers want you to buy a new car, but they have forgotten that if you lose all your investment at the time you want to sell it used, then you've lost a lot of money for trade-in. If you can still get 5, 6, or 7 thousand for your used car, wouldn't you rather have THAT car, than another you paid slightly less for new, and can't sell it for $500? Ok, that's an exaggeration, but you get the point that anything you buy has a resale value, if you buy American, due to FACTS and history of repairs, they're worth less when high mileage, but not foreign cars, usually. So there's the main difference. And it's about money. Do I drive foreign? No, I have a Jeep Cherokee, and 8 AMC Gremlins. :) plus some other old cars. I did drive foreign on the roads awhile back, when I wanted reliable transportation and good gas mileage. And would again, too. Facts is facts. I just don't trust the American car makers, until I see a USA car or truck go 200k without major engine/trans repairs, I won't be lookin' at them. - The Gremlin Guy -

GM went through a spell (think 1998-2001 Malibu) where the cars consistantly needed repair, mainly with the engine. Ford put engines that lacked power for the car in their lines. The Japanese cars consistantly showed reliability over the past decade or two. I still feel that the American truck is better than any foreign truck though. And yes, both of my cars are American.

Foreign or domestic a vehicle's reputation will be directly based on reliability and price.Needless to say many of the problems with American vehicles start at home, right in Detroit. The US manufacturer's try to make a quality product but the costs of manufacturing a new car, especially labor costs have left domestic automakers making concessions to quality trying to compete. The top quality engineering and cheap labor that foreign automakers use produce the best reliability and value in the automotive market.

design, function, and mileage. cars that sell well in the american market are pickup trucks and suvs. more and more people have discovered that they don't need that extra space, but rather they need more mileage due to gas prices. also when you sit in a american car compared to a german car the interiors are just so much better in other cars. american cars use so much plastic and they dont' alway fit together well so it leaves gaps everywhere. also reliability is a lot like trust, people have lost trust in the american car and now they have turned elsewhere. if today the american car is more reliable then japanese cars people won't believe it for the japanese cars have been reliable continusously.

I agree with Rich - the foreign car engines tend to have a lot more life to them. I had Ford and it was in the shop more than on the road. I now own two American cars and so far so good.

Reliability shows they have been more reliable for the past 20 yrs. I think Chevy & Ford with there new SUVs will be more reliable because they are now falling off in sales & they have to due something to gain back their sales. This could take a few years for them to build reputation due to each having some lemons that have gave them both a bad name. I do agree they both make great vehicles.

The perception of reliability is no longer there for American cars. So therefore all the sheeple just jump on the import bandwagon. I have owned all American cars and have been very pleased with them. I had a 1990 buick regal that got to over 200K on its original engine and tranny and my Pontiac has been trouble free for the 60K miles that I have owned it. My Mom has had two astro vans - the first one got over 200K on it and the second now has a little over 100K on it and has only had one repair. I like my GM vehicles and will continue to buy them because they have been good for me.

When you are driving and you look at all the other vehicles around you, the only 80's models (since they're like 20 years old now) are honda's and toyota's. Very rarely do you see an 80's model ford, chevy, or dodge. Japanese cars last longer and driving on the road proves just that. Also, in my opinion, Honda's and Toyota's look better anyway.
