The police officer has more unknowns and more danger. A prison guard must assume everyone he meets is dangerous and that is why they are locked up. The police officer must pull people over and treat them with respect until he has probably cause to resort to weapons. In prison you handculff everybody that you have predetermined are dangerous and you can't do that on the street.

As being a former correction officer i say both are even. in the prisons the inmates have 24 hours a day to think about getting at officers. they are around other inmates and they are crafty. shanks(homemade stabbing, slicing instruments), douches(body fluids, liquids human waste) mixed together then thrown on officers are by far the worst thing to happen...it takes days to get that smell off of you even after multiple showers and then you do not know if the inmate has any diseases. you never know if a bunch of inmates are going to jump you on your tier. you walk down the tier where it is sometimes 100 inmates and only you up there...100 to 1...hmmm. if you do not have the balls or the guts to be a correctional officer stay out.
i am now trying to be a police officer here in maryland. i decided i would like to take a chance on the street helping people if i can. yes a police officers job is also dangerous. never knowing what a call can produce. one of the most dangerous calls is the domestic disputes...you just never know if the man or woman is the aggressor nor do you know if you arresst one then the other might come out to defend the arressted. these jobs both are as dangerous as the other one...never knowing what is around the corner...that is why when you hear the true blue it means that law enforcement no matter what branch stick together.

both are dangerous. With one you deal with the person on the street, there are times when deadly force is needed, but not as much as news and movies show.
The other you deal with many all day in a small area, there are fights all the time . Then you have murders to dael with too. You are in a place that can explode in a minute.
I'd say both are dangerous and these officer do the best the can. I also know that they don't make much money.

Having worked the streets for 10 years, I'd have to go with corrections officer as being the most dangerous. Yeah us road guys have the occasional pursuit, armed madman and all that but where do we send those guys? 24/7 locked up with human filth is a dangerous job anyway you slice it. On top of that the rules of engagement for corrections guys are even more ridiculous than ours.

statistically, a police officer's job is unquestionably more dangerous.
Police Officers deal with unknowns all day, and deal with armed, and sometimes intoxicated, people. Corrections Officers deal with mainly unarmed people who have already had the realization that they are locked up. People seem to lash out at Police Officers more to avoid going to jail.

A police officer works in patrol cars and keeps the streets safe. They also investigate certain cases. C correction officer works in a jail controlling the inmates, giving them meals etc.

I really respect Corrections Officers and could not do their job. They are subject to much more harrassment and really dirty little capers than I could ever face on the street, plus they are not armed.
I think both jobs have dangers that are unique to each position, but my hat is off to Corrections Officers. They do one heck of a job.

dangers exist in both jobs.. but I'd venture to say patrol officers defuse more situations.
