A friend of mine is absolutely devastated right now because he exposed himself on a digital web cam after receiving MSN 'adds' on a chatline. He claims he did not remember the person ever stating their asl, but when asked to reveal himself on cam, he did so and afterwards was then threatened by a person now claiming to be a 24yo male who was threatening to report him to the police. The person provoked him into doing this on the camera, and without knowing the age of the person, he did it anyways. I feel this is the mistake, but he didn't make the mistake of exposing himself to someone he KNEW was an underaged teen. The person threatening to report to the cops claimed he had already given the 'asl' and stated it was a 14 year old girl, but trust me, I know my friend and he's an idiot for doing what he did, but he'd NEVER fool around with someone he knew wasn't at least 18 years old. What is going to happen?

My friend just told me that after long discussion with this guy, and begging and stating he was extremely sorry and just devistated, the guy wasn't going to report, but my friend has seriously not stopped thinking about this...like i saw him the other day and he was crying. How can my friend know he is safe? Like this kid wouldn't harm a fly, and now he's afraid he will be arrested for something he didn't even know he was doing. If he is arrested, what sort of trouble is he in? Is this a big offense?

I think people are missing the point here. My friend didn't KNOW it was a 14 year old. I am sorry, but he just did not know.

I can give you some input on this. I live in Murphy, Tx.
Where they did those Dateline NBC stings on those chat predators.
Well guess what?
They had to let all those people go.
You probably never heard that part of the story.
Turned out it was because the server being used for the chat was in a different state.
Just a small loophole that some lawyer found.

What I'm also saying is that this guy would have to report it to his local, wherever that is, police.
That police would have to call Mr. cameras police and all sorts of red, possible interstate / extradition, tape that, on their tight little city budgets, they just can't afford to do that kind of legwork.
Sad, but true.
It's hard to judge these kind of cases, I mean some 14 year old girl was on Yahoo Ans. the other day explaining that, strangely enough, that she had seen some older guy naked on a web cam.
Well, she had the screen name "sexalicious" and she was in Yahoo "Adult Romance" chat room when she saw all this.
Yet, she's the one yelling about it!
Give me a freakin' break, you were askin' for it!!!!!!

Not saying what you did was right or wrong.
You couldn't possibly post EXACTLY what happened and I'm not going to judge you or give you false info based on the stuff you wrote here.
Just sharing what I know.

The good news is that for there to be an arrest, there has to be a good chain of evidence. That means the other person would need to have logged the chat under specific conditions.

The penalties for cyber sex with under age kids can be HUGE. It's not a great defense that he didn't know (the old "I swear, she said she was 18" won't fly here) or missed the statement.

He needs to reverse his approach. Instead of "NEVER fool around with someone he knew wasn't at least 18 years old" he needs to "NEVER fool around with someone unless he knows they are at least 18 years old". This includes exposing themselves on web cam. If you do not KNOW the other person is at least 18, just don't.

Additionally, it does not matter who moves the discussion to sex or if the other person asks for him to expose himself.

He broke the law. If he was told the person was 14 he's screwed. What normal person send pictures of Mr. Happy anyway?

He wouldn't harm a fly, but he would expose himself to a 14 year old girl?
Oh please.
He is a predator and should be in jail.
