How much would carpet/installation cost for about 800-900 sq. ft.?

I am about to buy a house that needs carpet replaced throughout. I am too shy to ask the people at home depot. I just want a plush, tan colored carpet. Also, does the price per square foot include padding, tack boards and installation, or just the carpet? Thank you.

About 5 times a year, Lowes does a sale with 10% off installed carpet with free carpet pad. We did this during the winter. We carpeted 1080 sq feet with a tan (actually it was called "New Leather" frieze carpet. It cost us right at 1000 dollars. We went with a fairly inexpensive carpet, however you could get a much higher grade for more money. The carpet we bought came out to under 1 dollars a sq ft. and we love it. It's cute, comfortable, and great!!

At Lowes, the price is shown three different ways. First it is shown as carpet only, then carpet and pad, and finally carpet-pad-install. I have no idea how it is at Home Depot. My husband forbids anything from Home Depot to come into our house :)


Don't be afraid to ask the people at the store. That is what they are there for.

It depends on what type of carpet that you choose (the quality) and also the area you live in. You can except for a good quality carpet to pay roughly $2-5 a square foot. Installation, you're looking probably $675 for the whole thing, and about another $300 or so for pad. Generally if there's carpet down there already, the installers will re-use the tack strip in place. It depends on the company that you are going through if their prices on the carpet include pad and installation. The place I work at, for example, the prices listed on carpet are material only. Just makes sure that when you are shopping, they are clear as to what the price includes.

I priced carpet at Home Depot last month. The average range was $25 per square yard, therefore yours would be about 300 square yards. Multiply 300 by $25 and that gives you about $750 for carpet, padding, and installation. Most of their prices include the whole works...or the ones I looked at did. I wanted the same carpet but in a smoky grey.

I would first be considering and restaurants in the area that have the seating available and might be able to provide a room or close for your event. As for the backyard, that sounds good. You have plenty of time to make it happen. You don't need a tent at all, but if there's not a nice shaded area, maybe provide a small one, some people get quite bothered by the sun. Given it's a casual reception I see no reason you couldn't have cheap table cloths, go get fabric from any fabric store. You can even use cheap plastic utensils and plates. It's all about you getting married and then having a good time, so don't get too caught up in the details of everything else. For example, no one cares if they have an embroidered napkin or dollar store napkin.

If you are using Home Depot, then set up time for them to properly measure out the room, then work with them to choose your carpet and pad (pay the most you can for the pad...you will never regret it), and get the quote. The price will change accordingly to the quality level of the carpet and the pad you choose and of course their labor charges. We finished a basement last year with 860 sq. ft. including the stairs and we spent over $2000 and did not pick the most expensive carpet as we were selling the house.

It would be difficult to give an estimate for laying a carpet, it would depend on
1. the carpet store you bought the carpet at.
2. if they will lay it for you, that is usually included in the price.
3. Different suppliers charge different rates some more some less than others.

It's up to them to tell you how many they can seat for a cocktail reception. You still need seating for 75 people because you can't expect many of them to want to stand up the whole time. You may not need large 5' tables though, since you're not serving a full plated dinner. Smaller 3' tables may work fine as long as you can fit 4 or 5 chairs around them. The venue should be able to tell you what their capacity is and show you photos of past events.
