Your husband stitched her up himself and you did not try to stop him? That poor puppy!!! I can only imagine how much pain she must have been in. Are you both insane? Peroxide kills healthy cells! I can't believe I'm reading this question!!! Why do you even own a dog in the first place, if you can't properly take care of it? If the cut is very deep, common sense will tell you ,that she needs to be taken to the vet immediately, to get the proper treatment for it, not treat it yourself. How irresponsible can you be? Do the poor puppy a favor and get it to the vet now, if you haven't already, then give the puppy to a rescue organization, someone who can give it the proper care, or the Humane Society. You are both very irresponsible and don't deserve to own an animal, if you are going to treat it this way. What you both did was very inhumane and so cruel? I feel so sorry for that poor puppy!

your husband stitched the puppy without medication? Oh Gosh!
antibotics are needed if you think it is infected. Did you shave the hair from around the wound before you stitched it up? Has your puppy had it shots? If not I suggest you take it to the vet and get it properly taken care of before it becomes more serious. I think it would be better to have an antibotic salve rather than drenched in peroxide all the time. Let it dry and heal. Better yet do go to the vet and tell the vet what has been done.

I hope he knew enough to leave a drainage slot. Iodine is good but it needs to be watered down and is usually available under the name of Betadine (sp?). Both hydrogen peroxide and iodine can damage newly healed tissue but that is preferable to infection. Chlorhexadine is better for a deep wound but your dog needs antibiotics and the only place to get that is from a veterinarian or a feed store. Triple anti-biotic ointments like Neosporin should not be used on a deep wound.

I'm thinking that you don't have money to spare for a vet at this time. Go with the answers that tell you to keep the wound clean and use neosporin. If it looks inflamed, swollen, or starts dripping pus, you'll have to see a vet for oral antibiotics and possibly a starter shot. Otherwise your puppy will probably die and not pleasantly. Having lived on a farm as a child with no available vets nearby, my mother stitched up more than one injured animal. The resulting scar may not have been pretty, but the animal only cared that it was still alive and healing.

I answered a couple of days ago and hope your puppy is doing okay. I thought of a couple of more things. In order to keep her from biting and licking the wound, you might need to improvise a head cone out of poster board and duct tape. Remove it when she needs to eat and drink. Also if she is healing well, be sure to take the stitches out around the 10th day.

Yeah a shot of antibiotic.. Why would you stitch her up yourself?? A vet can do it properly.. Give a shot so she isn't in so much pain while she gets the stitches.. Especially something that is very deep.. It should have been cleaned out very well before it was stitched up.. Peroxide doesn't promote healing at all... Are you afraid of going to the vet??

When that happened to my dog at 7:00 pm one evening, we bought some wound cleaner at the pet store, wrapped it in pet tape with non stick guaze, and put her cone on. Then we took her to the vet the next day at their first available appointment. They gave her a shot of antibiotics, cleaned the wound, shaved the hair, and used a medical staple to close the wound. Then they gave us take home antibiotics to give her orally. They told us not to wrap the wound or put anything on it - so on that note, I would say nothing. And we kept her cone on her. But you SHOULD go to the vet to at least get antibiotics. BTW it healed beautifully and AMAZINGLY fast. It was practically closed by the next day. And the peace of mind was worth the price for the antibiotics.

Antisceptic gel! You know, the non-stingy stuff that keeps us from getting infected when we scrubb our knees?

Check out your local pharmacy or wal-mart, they've got it everywhere. Remember, antisceptic *gel*.

And as a second note... you should take the puppy into the veterinarian, just for a certified doctor's advice. Never know, the problem could be more serious than it looks.

Hope your puppy gets better
Cheers

Don't put peroxide!!!!! It is good right after it happens, but no more because it starts to kill the tissue. I would wrap it up, if you really want to put something on it, put neosporin. Wrap it for a couple of days then re-wrap and check it to make sure there is no infection! Keep her out of water until it starts to heal. Good luck! NO PEROXIDE! :-)

peroxide does nothing to prevent infection.
antibiotics prevent infection (which can be obtained from a VET) and so does diligent care and drainage of the wound
but since your husband sticthed it -- (nice job by the way)
you may have very well sealed infection in
NICE WORK!!!!
I hope you don't have kids!!
