You co-worker has heard blame and critizism in your remark - kind of sounds you are saying she is not efficient. You could have said my trash is empty because I have a need for efficiency. I would just apologise and tell her what I just told you.

Don't bother, she's obviously looking for drama.
What if you said you did throw something away in HER trash can? Will it be the end of the world?
Next time she complains just exchange trash cans or throw the contents of hers into yours so that she has nothing to create a drama with.

Make a medal/ badge with trash police written on it. Give it to her and tell her that since she is more concerned with the trash/ waste issues around the office instead of her job that everyone has elected her to moniter/take out the garbage. Or you can just say
'wow......you're really stupid or really paranoid." then walk away.

How bout..."My trash can is empty because I got up and walked allllll the way over to the dumpster (whatever) and emptied it and I must've been pretty fast if you didn't see me!"
Or..."Would you like me to notify you next time I'm going to empty my trash so you can make sure I'm not being so lazy as to put it in yours??!!!"
"Maybe before our next break we can BOTH be efficient at the same time and empty our trash cans at the same time!"
"Would you like to spend some extra time together, cause if so, we can walk and empty our trash at the SAME TIME!!!"

Sometimes it's best to answer back with another question. That will confuse and diffuse.
So... the response would be... " well... are you feel not efficient?"
or..perhaps less aggresive - "why would I put my trash in your can?"
or... oh? what time is it? Gotta get back to work.

You say "No, I'm saying that perhaps my trash can is less full because I'm spending my time working and not nosing around inspecting others' trash cans."

Say, Yeah. Want to do something about it? And here's what we can do to make sure that you're not putting recyclables in the trash...get her a recycle can if your office doesn't already have it.

Efficiency is not the reason her trash can is fuller than yours. I wouldn't bother to respond to her argumentative attitude. If she is less efficient than you, just say to her, "if the shoe fits, put it on". I would also ask her if she thinks she is less efficient than you. Please, don't get hooked into her petty peevishness.

Just say, " Hey, I'll buy you lunch if you can find one piece of my trash in your can ". Since it sounds like neither of you likes the other, that should satisfy both parties...

Smile & say nothing...let her draw her own conclusion. And if she complains to the boss, she's the one who looks like the fool, creating an argument where there wasn't one. Let her hang herself.
