Mastiffs. here are some that i would recommend
French mastiff
Cane Corso
Bullmastiff......those are probably the top three, but
if you want one that will truly guard your house i say
CANE CORSO or Pressa Canario but they tend to be more aggressive, good watch dogs self controlant

um Busy littl Kitty------i have to disagree with you.....a lab would not be a good choice
you would be more save with a bullmastiff,
way more self control than labs
thats why they use mainly german sheperds and bullmastiffs
as police dogs, they know when to attack and when to stand down., but bullmastiffs look tuffer and have less health risks

iif ya want a more energetic dog that is also a better watch dog than a lab you should consider a dogo Argentino or something along the line. less health concers and dogo argentinos have a better sense for danger approching, or a friendly stranger

more along the guard dog side i would say pit bulls, caucasian sheepdog, rottweilers,
dogs that can really get ticked off...
they usually point they're ears back signaling.
I WANNA KILL YA NOW!!!!

Mastiff's tend to be more mellow and one of the friendlier dog breeds. who have more self-control.
But many unintellegent people think of them as killer dogs.
so ur safe and have a nice companion

But if ya want a real guard dog..Kangal dog. no doubt

but if you want a smaller guard dog i would go with the bull terrier

The first thing you need to do is make a list of possible breeds you would like. Then you need to research each breed to find out what kind of health problems they have, exercise requirements, grooming requirements, and general temperments. That will help you decide what breed would fit in with your lifestyle. All breeds have their pros and cons and you need to make sure you can handle the type of dog you choose.

On a personal note, I would choose a Great Dane. Their bark is deep and their size is very intimidating, but every dane I know would rather lick you to death before biting you, yet the strangers stay away from my house.

I would suggest a Lab. They are friendly but when they bark it is very deterring. You can train them to do practically anythign as they are very smart. The dog does not ahve to be big to be tuff. My scottish terrier is trained very well and when someon came in our yard uninvited last year she was the first one to get to him and grab his pant leg. Trust me he went right back over that fence quicker than anyone I have ever seen! Just dont get anythign that is so big that you are afraid of it, or that you cannot handle. You should be able to pick your dog up if need be. You DONTwant a Mastiff or German Shepherd if you are not familiar with that breed. I have had German Sheps all my life and they can be very mean towards strangers if nto tainred proerly and Mastiffs get to be around 200-300 pounds. Just food for thought.

Well, the best dog is a Doberman Pincher, or a "Dobbi."

They look tough but would let a stranger get near him/her with exchange for a little play time and petting if socialized right. But if needed, they WOULD protect your territory.
Here is a site on "Dobbies."

WARNING: Dobermans need LOTS AND LOTS of exersize. Good Luck, and I hope you find the right dog!

Bull Mastiff's look very tough, but i've heard that they are very friendly. Basically, any big tough dog can be nice to its family and owners, if you train it properly. Just go for what you want in the looks, and you can change how it acts.

Hahaha - my golden retriever sounds really tough when he barks at people approaching the house - but as soon as the person actually sees the dog, forget it.

Any nice dog that barks is usually enough of a deterrent. Any more than that requires intensive specialized training or you'll have nothing but a dangerous dog.

An APBT. People are afraid of them because of all the media hype. They are without a doubt the most loving and friendly dogs there is.

just so you know, a watch dog is just supposed to notify if anyone, is there, they dont attack. i would say a german shepherd, chihauha, rottweiler, or labs usually make good watchdogs. For a GUARD dog, you would have to know more about dogs to get started.

German Shepherds. Very nice playful dogs, but if someone messes with their owner they are screwed.
