My roomate just bought one and I tried it on my new 32" 780 P HDTV. The picture seems to be alot more crisp than on the standard progressive scan dvd player. The difference will depend on the tv (780/1080 I/P) with the 1080P being the higher grade. The upconvert dvd player for about $100 will probably provide you with a player that can upconvert to both 780 I/P and the 1080 I/P. The brand I tried was a samsung bought at Best Buy for about $100. It seems worth it whether you are replacing another dvd player or just want something to compliment your new tv. Of course the HD dvd and blu ray players are best but too expensive, this should do the trick. Good luck.

got a philips dvp3960 at walmat for $45.

the best thing about this unit is it says it will play damn near anything AND it does.
A lot of units say that but don't.

It upconverts, but I don't need that because my new panasonic 50 plasma will do it. It has HDMI output as well as composite and component.

but you can't beat the price. I Had a 642 philips before this. relegated that to the mtn house. still works just fine.

i'll sell you mine for $50. let me go look for it and i'll give you the model and specs...ok its a toshiba SD-4980, retails for $99 on amazon. its perfectly good, i just have newer equipment now. it upconverts all the way to 1080i, has hdmi, and will play just about every format including divx. i also have a toshiba hd-a1 hd-dvd player sitting around collecting dust which i'll let go for $150. either way, email me i'll help you. i can provide pictures.

I saw a sony one at radio shack for under 100 bucks, it also had hdmi, and it was a 5 disc changer. Might have been just my store, but worth checking out.
