I control my thoughts, God allows me that. Interesting question though.
If I were to hypothesize, I'd guess that most athiests' thoughts are technically driven by religious oppression, but I counter that it is actually the Holy Spirit within them that drives them to disregard religious oppression! They are still doing God's will just as Jesus taught. They are only going directly against God if they sin against the Holy Spirit.
Respect the Holy Spirit. Anyone can doubt the Father and the Son. Jesus wanted us to respect each other, no matter the beliefs. We are all driven by the Same God, believer or not.

I take my thoughts captive and make them obedient to Christ Jesus by the power of his Holy Spirit.
2 Corinthians 10:4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
Philippians 4:6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Romans 12:1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Everyone controls their own thoughts. Other people may try to put thoughts into your head, however, you are the one thinking the thoughts. I choose to think on the teachings of Christ. Not because someone told me to do it but because that is what I choose to think about. We are not a bunch of mindless robots if that is what you are getting at. And I do think that is what you are getting at.

I take responsibility for my own thoughts... they are mine... I choose to accept my religion... and my what my pastor says... I take responsibility for my thoughts...
It is really niave to think that you are not in control of your thoughts... and highly disempowering... How can you be good counsel to anyone if you don't accept responsibility for your own thoughts :Proverbs 11:4-6)
