It's perfectly acceptable to do as you please, but if you consider yourself a Christian, it would seem that you were trying to follow the words of Jesus Christ..
I don't consider myself a Christian at all, but I do think Jesus had the right idea on a lot of things, but I really don't like the whole religion of Christianity. It's a matter of personal opinion, so now you have mine.

I am not religious myself, but I can understand how you, as a Christian, hold Jesus' words at the highest importance and there isn't any shame in that. However, I think it doesn't have to be so 'by the book;' so long as you know the difference between right and wrong. Like I said, I am not a Christian, but I constantly ask myself, 'Is this the noble thing to do?' 'Am I treating them the way I want them to treat me?' That sort of thing. Keep up your personal relationship with your God and do what you know is right : ).
Good luck!

My philosophy is to do the right thing and you can't go wrong. Jesus was not the only wise man to live on earth, and all of these wise people were basically saying the same thing: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Known as The Golden Rule.
What else is there? Just be yourself and do not lie, cheat or steal. That will cover all the bases.
This philosophy will work whether you are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, whatever.
Acting in this manner is even more important today than it has ever been.
Let's all just be decent human beings.

For most believers in Jesus like Catholics as me, they do the things Jesus wants, because of respect of the love God gives to them, not by law or a commandment
Doing otherwise lead to hypocrisy.

Sadly the words of Jesus are unimportant today, but only according to our society. We are called upon to follow him in his footsteps but continue to make our own paths, especially this day in age. To answer your question plainly, yes a christian should do the things Jesus told them to do.

Are you kidding? Jesus' commands are the commands of God. He said that anyone who heard what He said and didn't do them was like a fool who built his house on the sand and when the storms came his house came crashing down. He said that on judgment day many people would come up like they knew Him saying "Lord, Lord, didn't we...."and list off all of the things that they did in His name, but because they didn't do the will of his Father He was going to say to them "I never knew you. Depart from me you workers of iniquity!".
Anyone who calls them self a Christian and who doesn't try to do what Jesus said to do is going to be in for a terrible shock on judgment day when they get cast into the outer darkness with all of the other hypocrites who will be weeping and gnashing their teeth for the rest of eternity.

Christians should DEF do what Jesus tells us to do! We( I am a Christian) belong to God, thus we should do what he says. Everytime we go against what we know is right (aka, what he tells us to do) we make him very sad. But he will forgive us if we ask. The words of Jesus Christ are THE MOST IMPORTANT WORDS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JESUS CHRIST ROCKS!!!!!

God's commandments are for our benefit, not his. He knows what is best for us. Obedience to those commandments are actually very easy and very fulfilling when the Love of God motivates you.

Jesus never told them to do anything. Jesus never wrote a damn thing. All the stuff attributed to him was written decades after his death by people who never met him. And even if Jesus' words somehow managed to make it through some weird Chinese phone game to end up in the Bible, people cherry pick what they want to follow. There isn't even much real evidence that Jesus existed at all.
