my fans do not kick on when my car is idling. is this because my relay is no good?

The fan not running is not a problem unless the engine overheats. Look in the underhood fuse panel for a relay marked "engine fan". Buy a new one, unplug the old, plug in the new.

The relay is located in the Power Distribution Box under the hood. You can swap another relay with it to see if that is your problem.

Check the fans and make sure they aren't seized and check the fuses.

We don't have a lot of relay problems with them, but it can fail.

Also, are you waiting long enough for the fan to accuate? Try with your AC on and see if comes on. If it overheats only at an idle, though, you most likely have a fan problem.
