We were on holiday and noticed there were many different names and uniforms worn by the police. Why is this? I thought they were all just the gendarmerie!

There are two main groups of police.
The Gendarmerie Nationale and The Police Nationale.
The Gendarmerie tend to police more rural areas such as towns and villages with less than 10,000 population. The Police Nationale are responsible for Paris and towns/cities with populations more than 10,000.
Also the Gendarmerie are split into futher divisions, such as air, marine, peace keeping forces etc - think this is due to it being a more militarised police division.

There are two types of police in France. You've got your bog-standard police who are sort-of the Mr. Plodds and then you've got your Gendamerie who are the military police. They carry guns while I don't think the Police do.

I don't think they like each other much either... :-)

Did you follow the news about the kids burning half of the city down. It was ridiculous.

Things like that make me wonder if they do have a system.

No idea, but they probably function pretty much the same throughout.

Can you believe I get two points for this?
