Tell them the truth. Truth is so rare nowadays that people go around buying useless gifts for others without knowing they don't like it.

Thank you very much. What made you buy this gift for me? It's something I never would have thought of buying for myself. I really dont know if I would ever use it.
See if that gets thru to them. You can always suggest that you both could take the gift back and go shopping together for something more appropriate.

It is very unclassy to exchange or return a gift you don't like (unless it is for the correct size of the same item). It isn't like you expected or needed the item, so just keep it and remember how much you are loved everytime you see it.

"Wow! How thoughtful. You really didn't have to do that. Etc... Make sure you sound sincere but don't over do it. Then very politely ask them if they would mind if you got one for you girlfriend/best friend/girl friends parents who ever would sound plausible. If they say no then ask them where they got it. Take your's back then pretend it got broken if they ever ask about it.......
Not very honest I know but you don't want to hurt their feelings.
I would love to know what you got 'cause I'm nosy that way :-)
