basically a VERY cheap hotel. But in exchange for the lower price, you can possibly have roommates, share a bathroom, etc. and the ambiance isn't exactly luxury! The primary guests are student travelers, so they usually make for a laid back, party type atmosphere, and FUN if that's what you are in the mood for!
Um, yeah, HAILEY is totally wrong....

A hostel, sometimes called a pension (pronounced pen-cee-OWN) is an inexpensive (e.g., $30 a night) lodging option for travelers, operated primarily on a drop-in basis, attractive to the backpack set, and is for sleeping only. There are few, if any amenities. Often there are rules that a guest must leave in the a.m. and not return until the evening. There are hostels all over the word and throughout the US. Once referred to as "youth hostels," most hostels these days do not limit users' ages. Typically, dorm style accommodations are offered for the single guest, but larger, more expensive rooms for families may be available by inquiring in advance. Cheap way to get across Europe, too.

Hostels are popular in European cities and were very popular in the 60s with the Hippies. They are a basic place to stay, for a few nights and are not as expensive as hotels.
Sometimes referred to as Youth Hostels. They are good for short-term vacation travel.
Hostel sleeping rooms are often small and you may have to share with more than one person.
Hostels are found in most large cities in the USA and around the world.

Actually Hailey is also right, there are more then one type of hostel.
There are the types that you stay in because you have no place else to stay and everyone is on a cot in one large room. We have hostels for our street people that live on the street. They can go there for hot meals and a place to sleep when they choose to.
And there is the type students use when traveling.
The places they put up woman when they are in danger can be either hostels or shelters also.
Basically the common denominator between all the types is that it is a shared premises for a very low price or for free.

it's a pretty cheap place to stay - they generally target travelers and backpackers and do not have many of the luxuries you pay for when you stay in a hotel. often in hostels you have the option of sharing a room with a few other people for even less money.
