I'm not sure where to start..do I take a class? Buy some equipment and just start climbing? It's something i'm really interested in but I have no clue where to begin.

are you livin' in the mountains now?...

the best way is to start small... get into backpacking... you'll meet great people on the trail.. join a local backpacking/hiking club... get involved with trail maintenance of the 3 great ones: the AT, pacific crest & continental divide trails...

get your body into shape carrying gear... get the core of your body (along with your legs) into shape... the altitude of the real mountains you want to climb will kick your *** even when you're in shape with 40 lbs of gear on your back...

if you really want to mountaineer, it's not something you can just pick up in a couple weeks.. it will be a devotion, a life-change on your part for years...

hope you can start & stick with it.. the rewards are awesome!

I would pick a small range of mountains and see what I was capable of and then work from there. A hike up the mountains (or hills). Then get steeper and steeper until you are eventually climbing. That is kinda what I'm doing, but I haven't started actually climbing yet. Now, I'm not sure I want to do more than hike in the rugged hills.
