Not a stupid question at all. On our executive jets we not only lock the doors, but we arm the security system. This system has motion detectors in places like the wheel wells and other little cubby holes around the aircraft where somebody might start messing around with the airplane. One of the crew carries a little pager when we are away from home base which beeps if the alarm goes off. The system will also indicate which sensors were activated so that we can give that area an extra carefull look during preflight the next day.

We also have locks on all of the baggage doors, equipment doors and service doors for the water and toilets. Anywhere somebody might be able to conceal something like a bomb. The overwing emergency exists are locked from the inside and a red flag reminds us to unluck them before flight.

No. In a commercial aircraft there are no keys to open the door, nor to start it.

After 9/11 all flight deck doors were required to be fitted with strenghtened doors that include a cypher lock (combination).

Even those are usually left open.

You have to remember, no one is allowed on the ramp unless you belong there. Airports have roving security guards at night. That is also when most maintenance is done, so usually there are techs working on the aircraft then.

Airliners do not have locks persay... but they do have tape that is put over the doors that will only stick once... When the pilots for that airplanes first flight of the day arrive, if that tape is not intact, they will know that the airplane has been tampered with and TSA will be required to do a security sweep of the airplane...

Also, it would be very tough to steal one if you didnt know what you were doing, and if you did know what you were doing, you wouldnt do it... if that makes sense... in other words... if you know how to fly a complex airplane, you are probobly smart enough to know that it is very hard to hide a commercial airplane...

Why are you looking to steal one? I would assume not because they are at an airport with security and security camera's.
