Adam was Male and Female to begin with.
Then, GOD put him to sleep and took out the "Female".

BB:
Adam didn't come first. Men have nipples because we're genetic mutations of females. That scientific fact might give fundamentalists temper tantrums, but it's true.
The book of Genesis in the bible was not written as a biology book, a history book, or even a philosophy book.
The people who put together the Old Testament had a view of history that is completely different from our. Not better or worse... just different.
Those people would probably get a good chuckle out of hearing that everything they wrote was now being interpreted as "11:00 Evening News" fact. They didn't look at Truth this way.
Their truth was that the great and wonderful and awesome God create humans and the Adam and Eve story was a way to make that point. Kinda like today what we call "allegories."
That doesn't mean it's not true. I happen to believe that the core meaning of Genesis, that God made humans and humans have this rebellious streak that makes them want to act up, is totally true.
But one specific man named "Adam" and one specific woman named "Eve" with the forbidden fruit ,and the talking snake -- that's all allegory, things that help our minds envision great truths.
So the bible is true. It's just not a documentary.

Creation is not really a point of view where characteristics are actually explained by anything. I mean, why do blind moles have eyes covered with skin? If Eve was made first and Adam was made out of Eve, then why would Adam have nipples? That still would make no sense. The answer to why any creature is the way it is, in line with creation, is simply goddidit.

I think it was simply a design issue -- too much open area!
I dont know if God created us like this so that we match or something lol, i think a chest would look a bit odd with out them.... Maybe after he created woman he decided they looked better??
Edit: All humans begin life in the womb as females. If no Y chromosome is present in the foetus, then the embryo will continue to develop as and be born as a female. If there is a Y chromosome present in the embryo, the male sex hormone testosterone restricts the full development of breasts to just nipples, the labia fuse to become the scrotum and clitoris develops fully to become a penis.

We learn from the 2 creation narratives different things (which is the reason that there are two), now in the first one man is described as 'man and women he created him' meaning originally man had characteristics of both man and female (many mystical concepts that are said seem to come from here). When god took a side (the word doesn't translate as well as a rib -mistake in the English translations) of him that was the woman. He formed the body and it could be that is why we are left with them because they were there from the women.

Human embryos contain characteristics of both sexes at first, because they all have basically the same genetic information, and this information is expressed as efficiently as possible as the embryo develops. This is design economy. For example, in all human embryos, at first both the müllerian duct system (female) and the wolffian duct system (male) develop, because both sexes have the genetic information for these structures.

The nipples are developed before the gender of the fetus.
Pay attention in health class and you'll know this stuff.
