Do not turn it into the Police Station, unless they guarantee they will destroy it. If it doesn't show up as having been used in a crime, they might destroy it. Or it might end up in someone else's collection, either legally or illegally.
Frankly if you want it destroyed, you can do it yourself, blowtorch and all, in a large safe place with lots of water and extinguishers.
If you are just looking to get rid of it, there should be a couple of gun shops in Cali that will buy or consign it for you. I don't know if in Cali, the pawn shops can do it.
You can also wait till one of your city's police departments have a trade in / buy back program. That way you'd get at least something for it.
And as everyone is suggesting, you can probably give it to a friend who would like it. If given to another firearm's collector, it will be greatly enjoyed.

If its a very old shotgun its possibly worth a lot of money. You might want to find a Blue Book of Gun Values (some libraries have them) or go to a reputable dealer. Some guns even in poor shape are worth lots so you should check before just throwing it away.

Why not just sell it? Is it legal? Take it to a pawn shop if you don't want it. Here in Texas you can just put an ad in the paper.

If you have no worries, take it to the local cop station. They will destroy it for you.
Just don't walk in there with the shotgun. Go inside, tell them your business, then walk inside with it, after they tell you. The last thing you want is surprising cops.

Hmm..... depends is it a legal gun (licensed)? If so just take it to a gun shop and sell it. If you killed someone with it you might wanna bury it or throw it in some water somewhere where no one will ever find it then go back and delete this question, lmao j/k

If it's a legal weapon turn it into the CHP or LAPD and they will melt it down. If it's an illegal weapon you need to get rid of it by other means (bury it or throw it in the ocean, preferably in pieces)
