whenever you see video of a tv/film crew on tv there is alawyas some guy holding a big long stick with a fuzz ball on the end, what is the purpose of this thing?

It's a microphone. The fuzzy stuff helps block out the background noise.

It's a microphone, usually called Boom Mic... The "fuzziness" is so it doesn't pick up wind noise.

thats the micro phone they use that for times they take shots with the crew out of the picture
