Corn meal is way different - it's basically ground up corn used for cornbread or that type of thing. Corn starch is a thickener, so is any kind of flour. Try substituting flour as your thickener instead.

You can not substitute by using cornmeal, it's totally different
Corn starch is a thickening agent, but in making the Pavlova, you can use some flour, as in most recipes it only calls for about 1/2 tablespoon of corn starch .

Cornstarch Substitute

For 1 tablespoon cornstarch, substitute 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour;

OR

1 tablespoon potato flour or rice flour;

OR

4 teaspoons quick-cooking tapioca;

OR

2 teaspoons arrowroot.

Pavlova is really like a Meringue Cake right.
Hope it helps.

You can't substitute corn meal for those =( and Yum on the Pavlova, wish I had the patience to make it.

Corn starch is available in every grocery store, look for Argo Brand Name in the baking section. Or go to the Goya section and you should be able to find both corn starch and corn flour.

Look at the link below for a picture of Argo Corn starch.

Not even close....go to the store, in the baking isle.

Convenient and versatile, corn starch is used as a thickener for gravies, sauces and glazes, soups, stews and casseroles. It also thickens pies and is an essential ingredient in corn starch puddings and cake fillings. In cakes, cookies and pastries, corn starch is often mixed with flour to produce more tender baked goods. It also is used to coat foods before frying, and as an ingredient in batters.

Nope, that won't do at all. Assuming that you are in the US, what you need is "corn starch" - it is called "corn flour" elsewhere in the world. Very fine white powdery stuff. You will find it in the baking aisle, usually right next to the baking powder and baking soda.

Umm, never ate Pavlova....what it may be.........

Anyways, recipes call for certain things so that the dish sets up right. Substituting is totally fine, but I'm sure you will have great Pavlona with corn meal instead of starch, I'm pretty sure its the same thing!!!!!!

Nope it's not. Corn starch is sort of a thickening agent. Corn meal is completely different. Maybe you can subsitute for a little gelatin powder. Good luck!

No the meal is too coarse you could substitute tapioca starch and fine cake flour. Good Luck!

No. No. No.
Corn meal is coarser, and will not blend into a creamy paste like flour or starch.
