is the same Bible that our ancestors used to justify slavery?

Do you realize the Southern Baptist Denomination was formed because the Southern Baptists split from the Northern Baptists...because Southern Baptists thought slavery was ordained by God.

http://www.sbc.net/resolutions/amResolution.asp?ID=899

So, most would agree that our religious, Southern Baptist ancestors who called themselves Christians were wrong about slavery...eventhough they felt very strongly about it, and had Biblical evidence to back up their belief...

Do you not realize that maybe you are wrong today about homosexuality...eventhough you feel you have Biblical evidence to back up your belief?

Our ancestors were convicted of their beliefs about slavery...just as you feel convicted of your beliefs about homosexuality.

Your thoughts?

One Footnote...the Southern Baptists just apologized for their role in slavery in 1995! A little behind time...will it be that long before they apologize for their role in alienating homosexuals?

its also the same bible that tells you to stone whores whom you see on the street. The same bible that is against divorce, birth controll, body piercings , drinking alcohol or any form of intoxication But these things are almost all acceptable....i wonder why they pick and choose what they want to follow and what they dont want to follow.

edit: Come on christians, give me more thumbs down, because all they do, is show that your dissaproving of your OWN scriptures. everything listed below is scriptures from your own book that you are condemning others with, and for every thumbs down I get from you, it shows that you cant handle getting scriptures that prove how evil your religion is. Thank you! Thumbs up from atheists, and thumbs down from christians, i win either way.

The Holy Spirit works in our hearts to convict us when something is wrong. This can happen suddenly or over time. To the credit of the Southern Baptists, they did come to the conclusion, through the work of the Holy Spirit, that slavery was wrong and they were wrong to support it.

The same thing is happening right now as respects homosexuality. Thousands and thousands of Christians in all denominations, straight and gay, are realizing that homophobia is a sin and all the efforts in the world to justify this sin does not make it right in the eyes of God. Will this happen with the Southern Baptists? Will they stop trying to justify homophobia due to the internal guilt they feel over it? Will they listen to what the Holy Spirit is trying to tell them or will their pride get in the way? Time will tell.

I agree with A-Theist that the Bible does indeed directly condemn homosexuality. I'd only add that there is absolutely no rational reason why any sane, intelligent adult here in the 21st century should give a flying frig what the Bible has to say about anything, save from an academic standpoint.

Yes, the Bible also condones slavery, enjoins parents to murder their disobedient children, makes death the punishment for marital infidelity, and so on. It's a relic of barbaric savagery, and to take it seriously today is merely to identify oneself as a backwards troglodyte.

Dear G.C.
As I recall, the Bible ALSO says to kill all witches, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." (Exodus 22:18) and to stone all hookers & clients of (John 8:3-11)… And I have never noticed any of these God fearing people out on 8 mile with a rock chasing down any working girls.
Christ didn’t preach "Love white heterosexual Christians as I have loved you, and hate fags." Nor did he preach in the war rooms of Rome or just to the rich. He preached to the hookers and to the sick… and he preached "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you" John 15:12 http://www.theworkofgod.org/Devotns/Euchrist/HolyMass/gospels.asp?key=10
If Christ preached love… And you preach hatred… Then whose work are you about?
Hugs,
PennyAnn

The Bible does not promote slavery, it merely acknowledges that it exists.

Indentured servanthood is a Biblical concept, especially when paying off a debt. The "master" was to treat his servants with benevolence and as though they were family, living under the same roof.

Like the Philippian jailer from Acts 16, he and "all his house was saved." (servants and all!)

That is a far cry from the type of slavery here in the USA during the 18th and 19th Centuries.

The Founding Fathers went to hell for disobeying the kingship that the Lord obviously put over them, no matter how unjust (Also for beings deists, I bet).

Anyways, think of how your grandchildren will think of you when they find out you were a severe homophobe

The bible DOES condone slavery.
If you have a disobedient daughter, it's okay to sell her into slavery, according to the bible.

That's directly condoning, as far as I can tell.

No, I am not wrong. Homosexuality is a sin. Read the verse.

Romans 1:26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

The Bible directly condems Homosexuality, you have to halfquote and make the Bible jump through hoops before it comes close to supporting slavery.

EDIT: the way southen farmers used it to support slavery, that is.

EDIT:So many people give me thumbs down just because of my beleifs? Now that's sad.

I think when the time comes for Christians to apologize to homosexuals, their religion will already be disbanded, and none of them will be around to apologize.
