Refrigerant lasts forever, unless it leaks. Your Escape likely has a slow compressor shaft seal leak, if it is getting low. Unfortunately, that is a common issue on newer Fords. Your system comes from the factory with u/v dye in it, so finding any leak should be a snap. Just get it looked at by a professional, the dealer being the best qualified. I had to change the compressor in my '01 Escape for the same reason, been fine ever since.

It should last forever unless you have a leak. Sometimes the seals will dry out and let the gas escape. Have it checked out and the problem fixed, then you should be fine next year when you need the AC. good luck.

An A/C system needs to be serviced on a regular basis just like any other system on your car. It's not unusual to have to add some R134a to a three year old vehicle.
