I am a career music teacher. Thank you for supporting your grandson's wish to learn music. If he works at this, then the lessons will be worth every penny. I assume that YOU are going to pay for his lessons? Then he needs to EARN them from you. Besides obvious things like mowing your lawn, etc, you should work out a contract - as long as someone ( a parent, or you if he lives with you) can vouch for the fact that he *practices* his lessons material every day (not just jamming with his friends - that is extra!) then you will fund his lessons. I live 100 miles north of NYC, and lessons here run about $20-25 a half-hour, once a week. I actually charge more, as do people here with several degrees and experience/reputation ( I teach flute).

Experts can PROVE that studying music makes you smarter - it actually increases the number of connections in the brain. He may go thru a phase where he want to be a rock star - all kids have dreams, that is natural. But the actual study of an instrument is a wonderful gift we can give our children. Did you ever hear an adult say "I'M GLAD I quit?" Of course not! Everyone says that they should have stuck with it!

Call the local colleges or even HS, and speak with a music teacher directly - have them recommend the best teacher in the area. Do NOT send him to some hack - there are PLENTY of people out there with degrees in music who are worth every cent. You buy cheap - you get cheap! You are one cool Grandma!

Brenda - I teach a little on the side- I'm not a degreed musician(I'm a mechanical engineer until 5pm). I second mamianka's advice- probably the best I've seen so far.

Youre probably looking at 40 bucks a month or so, depending on where you live.
