it would be a nice gesture, but not necessary. :) a card would be enough.

If you're invited to the engagement party, chances are you're most likely also invited to the wedding, and everyone knows that gifts are expected at the wedding. A gift would be nice, because someone is paying for the party, but it doesn't need to be something huge, maybe get some friends who are also invited, and split the cost for a nice date night, like dinner at an expensive restaurant, and movie tickets for the newly engaged, or pay for a day at a couple's spa, something like that. Sometimes there are themes for the engagement party, and that should be mentioned on the invite, if it is, get something for them along those lines.

It is interesting to note the difference of cultures regarding weddings etc. Here in Australia, it is quite common for the brides parents to hold an engagement party....in some cases the bride and groom hold it themselves. it is usually held at the home of the brides mother or even at a local hall. A meal or a BBQ is served and everyone usually brings along a gift, usually household items for the couples future. It is not stated that you have to bring a gift but everyone just does.

One should bring something whenever they are invited to someone's home for a function. It is always proper to bring the hostess something. If the hostess is the person engaged - even more reason to bring a gift.

Gifts are not required at an engagement party, you can take a card. It's just an informal time to visit.

Maybe a little something like a gift card to a dinner or a show would be appropriate.

I don't. There will be enough gift-giving occasions for the couple in the next few months.

It depends what type of party it is...I have taken some to some, and not to others....I take something small and meaningful....Yankee candle sets, a personalized photo album to remember the wedding experience. Or a nice set of wine glasses.

No, not necessarily. People usually just take gift cards to target or such or a card.
