Ok, so whenever I am taking a nap, my cat will come up next to my head and rub it with her head. I think this is a sign of affection, but from time to time she will "smack" me with her paw. She has claws, but she doesn't scratch me. They don't hurt either. Then she'll sit and meow at me and rub my head again. I thought maybe she wanted some more food/water except she just stares at me when I give it to her. What's up?

Your cat is doing a couple of things:

When a cat rubs it's head (just in front of the ear) on you or anything else, it is leaving it's scent. Cat's have scent glands next to their ears and it's rubbing on you to deposit the scent on you.

When a cat seems to be offering affection (like when it comes up and rubs it's body against your legs), it is submitting to you as the dominant one. That is, the cat is letting you know that it knows you are in charge.

I'm thinking the smacking with the paw thing is similar to the submission thing. But, who knows? Cats do all kinds of goofy things.

She's telling you to pet her! Cats love to be stroked. She wants to wake you up so that you can give her attention. My cat just puts her paw on me. She has hit my dad in the middle of the night before.

She's playing with you, just wanting some affection, if she's the only cat in the house, she's probably lonely and wants to cuddle and play, even though you want to nap.

My cats sleep most of the day and want to play all night.

OK my kitten does the same she loves you and when she smacks you it just means she's playing a little or maybe when she does that it means she wants a little attention. So just see what she wants and relax its normal.

Awww....she just loves you and wants your attention. That is so sweet. Cat's are great!

My "big guy" does the same thing. I give him food and water and he just looks at me. So I call him up on my lap and just pet and love him and he's content after that. He just wants attention.

Your cat sure needs more affect, they are very independent and the cats are inteligent. Maybe it likes to be near your becouse it is friendly. The cats don't like to be alone.

She probably smacks you because you aren't giving her ENOUGH attention, or the wrong amount, or whatever. You should be ashamed of yourself for not reading your cat's mind and responding with the appropriate attention level. When kitty wants loving, kitty gets loving!
