< 24 hours ... no purchases without paying duty.
24-48 hours ... $50 Canadian duty free
48-168 hours ... $200 Canadian duty free
>168 hours ... $500 Canadian duty free (total exemption for one calendar year, by the way)

And 168 hours is a week (7 days).

You can bring back as much as you want, just not tobacco or alcohol. BUT you are likely to be charged duty on it. If you stay 24 hours then you get a $50 exemption.

You can get a card at the airport telling you how much you can bring back depending on how long you have been away.
Actually, they rarely inspect your luggage anymore, but if you are going to act nervous and guilty, you had better stick to the legal limits. Personally, I find the limits very generous, and never have to exceed them. Of course, I don't drink or smoke, and that helps.

I would like to buy a down parka worth around $500.00(US) online from Canada. I am just wondering how much custom duty or tax I will have to pay.

You aren't supposed to bring back anything when you are only gone for 10 hours. You can bring back C$50 if you are gone for 24 hours. This link should help you out.

Maybe you should practice saying "Do you see any price tags? I've had this old thing for years." ;-)

Good luck.

sure, you would be charged taxes on the transport fee besides. yet you may deliver relatively plenty around the border accountability unfastened, depending on how long you're interior the U. S., so make certain you realize what your allowances are. in case you reside for twenty-four hours you may declare as much as $50 of goods with out paying responsibilities, and it you reside 40 8 hours you may declare as much as $4 hundred and in case you reside 7 days you may declare as much as $750 withoug paying accountability. 2 human beings can combine their quantities. those links would help you. best of luck.

One thing to also think of is write down where things were made. If you're going to be honest about declaring everything. When you report your amount, the agents are going to want to know where things were made because each country has it's own duty rate. Although, if you're going to lie, there's no need to do this ;-)

Have a good trip!

Looks like it's down to $50 worth without having to pay duty.
