With all our military stretched all over the world and cut back to our military we are weak, yes we've have nukes but we would only use them if we get nuked. Just say Putin decides to tame the British lion by invading British soil. Would NATO really run to our aid, treaties aren't worth the paper they are written on, other NATO country's could start to distance them self from Britain if the diplomatic row with Russia and Britain lengthens.
I'm not paranoid but I live in a remote part of Scotland, and there's uneasiness a sixth sense sort feeling I guess that somethings afoot, but I've been talking to some old timers and they had this feeling during early years of World war 2?

Russia is steadily build its military strength to what it was during the cold war. You must be able to back it up if you willing to buzz British airspace almost weekly?.

Russia just now is on a roll financially, militarily and politically because of foreign investment and Russian infrastructure is steadily being built up to way it was during the cold war. A lot of foreign business is being bought by Russian business men with connections to their government and soon Russia will come self reliant and less dependent on the west like back in the days of the cold war. Russia is a police state and has control of it people through the media and other means. Any body who protests in Russia is arrested so no free speech. Putin regime intimidate any political party who opposes Putin's policies so Russia is a nice place to live just now yeah right. Russia must be at a stage now where it thinks it can stretch its political muscle externally by intimidating country's like Britain and other European country's. It a dangerous game Russia is playing because it could back fire if they start using their military to intimidate other countries then Russia would be the losers in the long run. I think they are starting to do this with Britain because they are weak militarily with most of British military stretch around the world, all it needs to spark something off is the Royal Air Force to shoot down Russian bear maritime patrol plane stroke nuclear bomber?.

I agree with you. I live in the U.S. I have noticed Russian internal and foreign policy quite revolting as of late. They've turned back the clocks. All of the reporters being killed there... the list is getting long. It's getting harder to enter or leave Russia. How about the government just taking over all of the companies? Ugly stuff going on.

I think we (I'm assuming you mean the Western powers) must act. I think we have sat on the sidelines for far too long, too worried about how we will be received criticizing another country after the mess we made in Iraq. It's almost as though those in Russia saw the opportunity to get dirty while the spotlight was on Iraq.

To me it seems that the solution lies in the UN/NATO establishing an independent investigation to determine if the government is behind the murders of Litvinenko and Anna Politkovskaya... as well as many others against Putin's government. There are a lot of other crimes, but these are the high profile ones I'm most familiar with.

If found guilty, those responsible should be punished, and if they refuse, sanctions should be instated. I hate when those in power get away with heinous crimes.

OtherRussia (Kasparov's party) is making a lot of headway. I think people in Russia have had enough of Putin. Let's hope so.

Not sure exactly what's going on.

Co-operation between UK and Ruskie intelligence in the matter of the war on terror thing, has always been on a low level. Fact is most of our work [intelliegence] is with the Saudis and Pakistanis.

We're fighting al Qaida which is an Arab based terrorist organisation, gang, group, lunatics, murdering pig dogs etc.

Anyway, much of what is going on is probably some kind of smoke screen created by whoever the KGB is now and Mi6 [SIS] lead by the ever faithful CIA.

Who knows? Anybody?

In addition to all of the above, there are a number of people living here in UK whom the Ruskies would like to get their hands on. We're not playing that game right now and are fully committed with our Allies to defeat the terrorists.

What is going on? Why are some people talking like we are on the edge of armageddon just because of a minor political spat with Russia?

Back in the cold war era these tit for tat diplomat expulsions were going on every other week. A few years down the line and we've now got people running for the bomb shelter because of it.

It's all a game the governments play, stop worrying over nothing and making mountains out of molehills!

Don't confuse the Russia of today with the military might of the USSR in the cold war. Russia is a new democracy and as such, not very politically strong. After communism bankrupt the USSR with the Nuclear Arms race between the Soviets and the West, not to mention their failed war in Afghanistan, communism fell to the Baltic Democracies, however, the resources of the Democratic Baltic States were not near enough to make them flourish. Once again they relied on the West to prop up their economy. Does Russia still have nukes, of course they do, but the real tactical element is can they maintain a viable naval force and standing army to engage in an armed conflict with the West, seriously doubtful. Expelling diplomats is a vivid way of one country telling another that we don't approve of your actions. That does not mean its a precursor to armed conflict.

It is strange that after all Blair's lies you still believe in your Socialist Politburo propaganda.

One Russian submarine may wipe out UK completely (just one), but Putin doesn't need it: lots of money from both sides invested.

The real cause is Gazprom trying to buy Centrica. Read about it.
In this deal, Marxist UK Government tried to save the face, but created a real mess. You see: wealthy Russia buys puny Britain piece by piece.

"Litvinenko, Politrovskaya, Kasparov..." bla-bla-bla, the same BS of Washington Obkom Propaganda. Could you start thinking yourself and read DIFFERENT sources?

The fact is Britain's economy and Russia's have become very intertwined over the past ten years so you shouldn't worry about a war with Russia, cuz them attacking UK is like attacking themselves and vice versa, the media is just exaggerating this situation it will all die than soon, both countries are just trying to flex their muscles

I don't think you have to panic yet, this is just another continuation of the great game. Apparently some Russian strategic bombers decided to buzz us today, so the RAF politely escorted them away. And so it continues...

Don't forget, there are anything up to 450 million people in the EU now, and only ~140 million people in Russia (not to mention 300 million in the US, and 1.5 billion in China, who ain't too hot on the Russians either).

P.S. living alone in remote parts of Scotland may eventually start to effect your mental health!
