The biblical story is of course fiction. People moved from Africa to Europe and Asia, some tens of thousands of years ago; these populations were separated from the root stock by distance and natural obstacles (such as the ice ages). You get differential evolution from separated populations (the extreme example being Australia), and since dark skin had no evolutionary advantage in a cold climate, normal genetic variation obliterated some of the genes that produce melanin. The Asian branch of the family had the same general fate, with somewhat different results.

Do you have the exact same skin color as your parents? No. You have something in between, since you took some genes from each parent.
Since we were created from Adam and Eve (according to the Bible), you can see how natural variation can occur. The simplest explaination is that one was very dark and the other was very pale. Their kids were in various stages between the two.
Other explainations include diseases that affect melanin production, such as albinism, or direct divine intervention at Babel (saying that more than just languages were diversified). But, you being of a scientific mind, would prefer to default to Occam's Razor. And the simplest solution that accounts for the most factors would be a very dark Eve and a very pale Adam (or vice versa).

Well first of all, race is not just skin color. Skin color actually has little to do with race. With that being said, if we were all one race, people would still find a reason to hate each other. The million or so deaths that have occurred in Iraq since the US began its invasion of the country 6 years ago have mostly come from sectarian violence between Sunni and Shiite Muslims. They're all the same race and ethnicities, but they hate each other because they have slightly different interpretations of Islam.

One doesn't need any more explanation than simple genetics: all skin color ("colour" for you Brits... =OP) is primarily derived from one pigment, melanin (there are other factors that determine skin color, such as slightly thicker skin that produces the yellowish tint in Asiatics, but only one pigment). There are 2 (possibly 4) genes that determine how much melanin the skin produces. For simplicity sake, let's just say there are just two and label them A and B for dominant and a and b for recessive. Therefore, if both Adam and Eve were AaBb (medium brown), they could produce children with AABB, AABb, AAbb... all the way down to aabb.

Melanin.
That's the stuff in your DNA that dictates skin tone. Adam and Eve had it, as did their descendants.
It is sun sensitive, and studies show that it can increase over time and generations. Generations of the same family living in warmer climates can and will develop darker tones. Which, are then passed down through the generations.

Genetics and The National Geographic Project to Track the Migration explains alot.
I totally believed in the evolution, and survival mode when humans migrated they have changed colors. It is said from the project two individuals of non-related physical characteristics seem to have close genetic structure. Which is so amazing at the design of nature. The aborigines, natives of Andaman and Nicobar Islands(in Indian Ocean) and few African tribes seem to have similar traits, whereas the people within the African continent seem to have the most diverse(dissimilar) genetic trait.
Which is so amazing to me, and yet intrigues me to study more about nature, and evolution. :-) Hope this helps.

We do just different shades, Skin tone not color. Melitonin is the color, if thats how you spell that. But yeah its just like any other color it has different shades. Look at the trees all the leaves are green but not the same green right. It would be Christian belief that Adam had all the genetic variance to produce all skin tones. Like early wolfs produced most selectively bread dogs we have today.
No Color Just Tone :)

Adam & Eve is more of a parable than a historical truth. The way I see it, anyways.
We know from genetic mapping that the area of the world a population lives in has a great impact on their melanin levels, as well as other genetic attributes specific to an environmental element or condition.

I don't believe in the adam and eve thing so I would have to lean toward the idea that our skin pigment is different do to the environment from which our decedents came from. Plus it would be pretty boring if we were all the same.
