They do make "flying cars" but the ones that look more like the jetsons aren't efficient/practical (see Paul Moller). Things that fly are efficient at flying. Things that drive are efficient at driving on roads. Mix the two and you compromise. In that compromise you loose things like efficiency/durability/usefull load capacity/etc.
The first is a flying jeep and my personal favorite.

The actual reason is quite complicated. I will try to simplify it. Mass produced vehicles are built to a certain attainable standard of safety based upon accepted norms. Aircraft have to be built to - supposedly - fail safe standards. That is one reason why training is MUCH more important and observed versus cars. An airplane CAN cause massive destruction. PLUS the inherited responsibility is HUGE! Did you know that many pilots are actually taught and told how to roll the plane inverted so the lift goes down? Why? So you can make sure where the plane strikes the ground does NOT have people. For the safety of others many a pilot has crashed his craft. And all we hear is how the plane dropped gas in the farmers field. Or how it was a miracle how no one else was injured. Those are NO accidents. Every time any kind of aircraft has a failure it makes the news because it usually causes an incident as well. Imagine if the news covered EVERY auto accident. NOW apply that low order of training and responsibility that people have with autos into FLYING cars!
WOW! Just wait for the lawsuits!

No one would be rich enough to buy one and everyone would have to learn how to fly which is much more complicated than driving. It would be way too dangerous having that many inexperienced people flying cars at hundreds of mph. Crashes and mechanical failures would be deadly because you're not on the ground. They would result in falling from the sky. If you crash in a normal car, you'll most likely survive, and if the engine stops, you can stop and pull on the side of the road and it's no big deal. If you're in the air, crashes and failures would be catastrophic. I'm not looking forward to seeing hundreds of loud flying cars littering the sky, being flown by average people who don't know a thing about flying. Some people can't even drive right and are dangerous enough on the ground, let alone flying in the air. Cars belong on the ground. The sky is for airplanes and helicopters.

There is a company the is working on making a car that can fly. The car is called the skycar. http://www.moller.com The main reason that flying cars are not available to the public, is that none of the major car manufacturers have taken flying cars seriously. Therefore, it is up to private inventors like Moller who usees his own funds to pay for the research and development. I think Moller has spent something like $300 million devleloping the skycar. In an interview with Moller about 6 months ago, he said that if he was given $500 million dollars, he could make a skycar that was available to the public for only 100K and that the car would be available in 3 years.

Don't tell Molt Taylor that cars won't fly. He built his first in 1949, and one is still flying. People old enough to remember The Bob Cummings Show on TV in the '50s will remember he had one and flew it at the beginning and end of every show.

Moller's plane will never fly with the public because they cost too much and are too complicated.
Cost is the biggest hurdle building aircraft. Getting a flying car certified by the FAA would cost millions, so buying one would not be cheap.

The first flying car to actually fly was built by Waldo Waterman. On March 21, 1937 Waterman's Aerobile first took to the air. The Aerobile was a development of Waterman's tailless aircraft, the Whatsit. It had a wingspan of 38 feet (11 m) and a length of 20 feet 6 inches (6.25 m). On the ground and in the air it was powered by a Studebaker engine. It could fly at 112 MPH (180 km/h) and drive at 56 MPH (90 km/h).

Well, back in the 60's and 70's, it was tough to keep the 454 Chevelle on the ground.
But the big reason is the the ammount of wing surface or rotor length it would take to lift a 3000lb car would make parallel parking a bigger challenge than most people like.

They did make one back in the 60's. It was propelled by a front propeller and had retractable wings. Forget what they called it, but it was put on the back burner due to the fact that there are no road ways to use them on. Their was also one made in the 80's, it was jet propelled with retractable wings. Again put on the back burner. The propulsion systems are to dangerous to be able to be driven in close proximity traffic. Could you imagine thousand of jet cars driving around, let alone the air traffic. It was determined that it will NEVER be feasible for a dual purpose car.

helicopters and airoplanes use exposed propellas. Those cant be used in towns at all. Right now people are working on enclosed propellas (like in jet engines but a smaller scale) that will make flying cars more likely in the future.

i don`t know if u have seen the news but some scientifics are already inventing cars that can fly, but is not gonna come out in a coplel of years because they are still testing if they work well.
if u dont believe me u could reach in the internet and u would see what i`m telling you dude.
