After the Islamic invasion on India we saw a few but fatal change in our society. Which we are changing from time to time. And I think some people don't need to point it out for us.
First is Child Marriage because they atlest to respect married women or girl.
Second Sati wife dying with husband (burning herself) yes this is to keep themselves away from the rapists (Moghuls)
We changed a lot after that as level 5 said Raja Ram Mohan Roy and few others contributed to eradicate this evil from the society.

Before posting such stupid questions, maybe you should actually read up on Indian history. India was a far more civilised, sophisticated and advanced civilisation before the plague of Islam came to India. Since Islam arrived in India and the delhi Sultanate was established in (I think) the 7th century AD, basically Indian destiny was destroyed. All the influence that India commanded in the world (along with Greece and China) was obliterated and progress, intellectual developments, innovation of knoweldge all ceased to exist. There is your answer. All the ancient temples that were thousands upon thousands of years old were all destroyed, Hindu priests were burned alive, their menfolk were butchered and their women were raped. Once the new rulers set in, the only thing that they cared about was converting the populace to Islam. Development of society became non existent. That is why, if you examine Indian history prior to the arrival of Islam, India was an influential power because Indian exports of knowledge and culture were felt throughout. However once the rulers were Muslim, rather than being in a position where Indians could influence, they were having someone else's culture and religion forced down their throat. A similar incident happened to the ancient Persians, who were far more better before they were Muslim than after they became Muslim.
Islam contributed NOTHING to India and sati burning was a way for Hindu women to escape the shame of being raped by Muslim barbarians.

Now it is the height the people who keep their wives and daughter, sisters stuffed in purdahs and veils all the day through out their life came say us that why you are doing this.
So you don't want Muslim context and want to know what was Bharath before you f**** came in, it was a good place with harmony and women had freedom to study, freedom to marry anyone they liked, and freedom of all kinds which you fanatics took away from them.
Talking about Gujarat and what is happening in Kashmir 4 lakhs of Hindus were thrown out of the state in ethnic cleaning and in Pakistan there were 15% Hindus approx at time of partition and now there are only 1% what happened to 14%
and even in east Pakistan this was the state.
And speaking of Taj mahal What the hell it is and how much revenue it is giving to India. Come and see the Tirupati Lord Venkateswara temple it is worlds wealthiest temple and the amount of revenue it gives to the country is used to the welfare of your so called Muslim brothers. And there are more wonders and architectural monuments in India than the Taj.

You have a right ot ask the question and you asked it good
We have the right to answer we answered now read it don't say don't give muslim context. Because your question is history based so with out giving muslim context this answer cannot be completed.
So better make your History right as Hans said Muslims have destroyed a lot.
As Laloo said don't you have caste system
As Philosophy said there are many big monuments in India which you'll wonder how they are made. For that you need an open mind to see and think.
Never ever point India

Should you not first take care of your own women's pitiable condition ? torture, poverty, illiteracy, purdah and what not
And this Sati custom is Meharbani of your muslim brothers. when they attacked hindu states, they would kidnap the women and convert them to muslim or rape them. To save modesty, the women decided to kill themselves when their husbands died. Rajasthan started it, followed by punjab and then some other states, particularly those which bore the brunt of muslim attacks, and it became a social custom.
No woman is burnt with husband now, this custom has been eradicated long ago. If muslim population increases in india, who knows this custom may again come back, because we hindus are so divided and fighting with each other.
Taj Mahal Revenues : nothing ! before the money earned by hindus and Taj Mahal was a hindu temple (Tejo-Maha-alaya) changed into Makbara like Krishan and Ram Janam Bhumi and shiv temples
Low castes : Muslims do have their own caste system, Khans, Sainads, Sheikhs, Pathans, Moghul, Mallik, and Mirza, , Darzi, Jolaha, Fakir, Mallah, Kula Kunjara, Kasai, Kalal, Dhunia, Abdal, Bako, Chamba, Dafali, Dhobi, Hajjan, etc and none of marrying with other caste and hating them
If musims burn alive innocent hindus in a train, they have to face the reaction, as all hindus are not cowards

Really that custom is not a religious one.
But it is a social behaviour developed at the time of Islamic invasion over India.
To protect their purity, women opted to die with their husbands who lost their lives in the war against Moughals.
But I agree with you that at an reason it is a social evil.

No way this is a Hinduism ritual or custom.
Its really a sad happening which was practised in a particular part of India.
It has nothing to do with Hinduism or its practices.

It is called SATI SYSTEM in Hinduism. SatÄ« was a Hindu funeral custom, now very rare and a serious criminal act in India , in which the dead man's widow would immolate herself on her husband’s funeral pyre.Sati was prevalent among certain sects of the society in ancient India, who either took the vow or deemed it a great honor to die on the funeral pyres of their husbands
The term is derived from the original name of the goddess Sati also known as Dakshayani (the first consort of Lord Shiva), who immolated herself, unable to bear the humiliation of her (living) husband Shiva by her father Daksha. The term sati is now sometimes interpreted as 'chaste woman'.
This is not a religious custom but was in practice for ages. In Mahabharata we see Madri, 2nd wife of Maharajah Pandu committed Sati giving her sons to Kunti Devi, when her husband died. The first and favorite 8 queens of Lord Krishna viz. Rukmini, Satyabhama, Jambavati, Satya, Kalindi,. Laksmana, Mitravinda, and Bhadra also committed Sati when Lord Krishna died.
A section of people are of the opinion that this practice came into effect only after the invasion of Islamic rulers, but what I have found is that this was prevelant in some communities in Rajastan area for ages apart from what I have mentioned above.
No this system is more or less stopped excepting stray cases and Government are taking stern steps to stop it. Thanks for the Great role played by Rajah Ram Mohun Roy for this cause.-
