You know, I'm a pretty easygoing person. But we have a secretary at work who sits a few feet away from me and she eats constantly throughout the day. She happens to be a gym rat but she eats carrots, celery and chips like 5 or 6 times a day and it's really getting on my nerves because you can hear the crunching and the biting constantly. She'll also get an apple and when she bites into it I just cringe.......I actually go outside for a break each time I see her bring her little bag of carrots by her desk just so I won't hear the crunching and chewing. I can deal with something like this easily if it only happened once or twice during the day but it's really ridiculous now. I'm getting to the point now of hoping she bites her tongue in half while she's chewing. LOL. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Oh yeah. Loud chewers, or those who can't seem to close their mouth as they chew really bug me. I mean, it's not a huge deal or anything, but it is rather rude and gross, no?

If this is disturbing and interrupting your work, it's a problem. Perhaps the simplest solution is to simply approach the person and say something like, "I'm not sure if you're aware, but I can hear crunching noises when you eat and sometimes it disturbs my work." She may decide to eat in a more private place just based on that. If that doesn't work, perhaps your manager can help you to either find a better location or can help you to negotiate a deal with your coworker.

When I was in college, there was a woman who came to one of a class I was in and always brought a packet of corn nuts (parched corn) to eat. It sounded as if she was chewing on rocks! I hated that.

I get especially sensitive to crunching noises when I'm hungry. Then it about drives me crazy to listen to people crunching.

But I can usually tolerate the people who are actually eating. The ones that are going to make me go postal someday are the people who constantly chew gum, particularly the people who snap their gum. Oooooh, I hate people doing that.

I can go insane with the sounds that people make while eating.

I'm sorry you have to work with that.
Do you have and IPOD or something similar you can use? Or you can buy a set of cheap earphones and plug them to your computer and listen to some music while she eats. Make sure you take them of as soon as she's done... it's actually kind of rude but it's for your own sanity.

I don't care so much about the crunching, as long as they have their mouth SHUT when they're doing it! I think this just happens to be the "thing" that gets to you. For some reason, all those little "habits" that people have really get on your nerves in an "office" type situation. I recommend pulling up some music on your computer during her "crunch time". :)

Haha, I'm so embarrassed to eat loud foods in front of others. But sometimes foods are just loud. I notice open-mouthed chewing gets on my nerves, but I've also noticed that it only bugs me when I'm in a bad mood.

IE. My mom and I will have a fight, then she eats something and it's annoying.

Is there something else bugging you about this woman?

It drives me INSANE!!! We like mexican food, so we'll eat at a mexican restaurant, and of course they have chips and salsa....

I don't care HOW hard I try to ignore the people that are 20 booths behind me, yet they are eating the chips louder than ANIMALS would!! It can be noisy with talk, music and I can STILL hear them plain as day and I just start to BOIL inside!!!! I just want to go over and give some manners 101!!!!!! Or just cram it down their throat for them!!!!!!!LOLOL

That reminds me of a lady I used to babysit for... we went out to dinner often (her, me, and her children).. after every bite, she'd go "mmmm" with the food still in her mouth, like it was the tastiest morsel on the planet! It was so aggravating, but at the same time, so funny!

anyways... Maybe you should just let her know nicely that it bothers you... or talk to your supervisor.. and if that doesn't work, just keep hoping that she'll bite her tongue. :)

I have. I mean, you get those people at lunch around the break table...but to sit through it like you do would drive me mad! My friend used to have a thing with swallowing....when people swallow too loud. It doesn't bother me, but, I think that something like what you are going through would bother me.

This reminds me of my pet hamster when I was 10. He would rattle the bars to his cage all night long, while chewing his wafer. I too, would be crazy to have a person like that near me.
