before i became disabiled from a mental illness i tried working and worked in the fast food resturants all of them around town.could not hold them down they kept saying we dont need you because you are to slow.do you think i would have a problem keeping my disability benefits down the road.

If you and your doctor feel that you are currently unable to work, then I suggest that you apply for Social Security. However, be prepared, that individuals often get turned down the first time, so do not let this discourage you. It helps if you have a case manager to go along with you and greatly enhances the likelihood of you getting approved for benefits the first time. There are different Social Security programs that will also allow you to work while you are drawing benefits, but this will provide you with a source of income.

Honey, I don't know anything about disability benefits. Maybe someone else can help you with that.
I don't know what your mental illness is, but if they fired you because you're too slow, I think you could find a job that didn't mind you being slow. Grocery stores hire guys to bag the food and carry groceries to peoples' cars, and lots of them are disabled. It might be a good idea to search the web for the best companies for disabled employees. I'll be there are quite a few companies that would give you a chance.

From my experience it is better to have tried to work at jobs, before claiming disability. Because it is proof that you have tried and were not able to hold down employment. There are different laws governing social security benefits in different states.
If you are on ssi your able to work, and they will withhold income depending on how much is made. However if it is over a certain amount the social security will think that your not disabled. It depends on the amount of income your bringing in every month.

No if you were unable to keep a job due to your mental illness then you qualify flat out. Thats the only way people can get it if you are UNABLE to work. You can not work AND claim for SSI though.

No I don't if you have proof that there is something really wrong and you aren't just a slow person. Has a docotr diganosed you with having something wrong? If not then yes down the road you may have problems keeping it.

See your counselor and rehab expert. Depending upon the state you live in, there are many assistance agencies where you can get both counseling and placement services.
