You're not too old, but if you've never been in a band before it can be a HUGE reality check. It's not all "Behind the Music - Motley Crue" style. That's for sure.

It takes a LOT of patience and "people skills" to deal with bar owners, fans, non-fans, douchebags at guitar center that try to sell you a new bass amp when you just need strings, and especially band mates.

Having band mates is like having 5 wives. All of them dysfunctional. Every single person that has ever been in a band has a bad band member story. Every single person that has ever been in a band has been in a "volume war" at one time or another. Multiply band problems by 10 if you start doing originals or recording.

Being in a band has a lot of expenses involved. Most "fun" bands don't make a lot of money - if any at all. You will still be a "working stiff", but your day will change a bit. Eat, sleep, work, argue with band over next cover song, crash in front of TV, repeat.

Don't get me wrong, the PLAYING part is awesome. You just have to really love to play to make it all worth it. Sometimes it's better NOT to see the wizard behind the curtain.

Your initial question implies you are doing this for a hobby, but the subtext states that it beats working 9 to 5.

It looks glamorous but it's hard work. You practice constantly, perform till the wee hours, and people can be cruel.

Do you play and instrument or sing?

For every person who makes it in the music business, there are thousands who fail. If you are really talented and really motivated, who knows, you might get lucky.

There are a lot of country artists who didn't start performing until they were adults...Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash were already married with families when they began.

If you get up in the morning and all you want to do is make music....if that's the first thing you think of...if it's your passion...give it a try. Just keep your feet on the ground and remember that it's a hard road and there are lots of critics.

Good luck.

I'm 26 and I just started singing in a band. I do work also, but I'm really enjoying performing at clubs and different events. Singing in a band as a hobby is one thing, but if you plan on making it a career, just know that the chances of "making it big" are VERY slim. But it is a lot of fun and a good way to meet people who have common interests.

NO!!! If you like to play music, and it's truly something that you love, than I say go for it. There's no use hiding from something that you really love, and if it really means enough to you to go for it, than GO FOR IT!!!!

The guys in Green Day are like 30-something, so I don't think there's an age limit on how old you can be to start performing in a band for fun, and maybe you'll get somewhere.

If you're really thinking of going big with your band, it's probably better that you are 27, because agents don't like to give jobs to kids who still need to finish high school or whatever.

I say there's no age limit to music. Music is an art, and I feel that even the very young to the very old, should be able to go for it. Seeing as you are twenty-seven, which is leaning towards young, but old enough, that you should totally go for it!!

have fun!!

No you're not. I'm 26 and play in a punk band. The only problem is you kind of feel old b/c most of the people that actually come out to shows are high schoolers and college kids, most working adults don't really care to go see some local band play unless they know you.

Heck no! Play your music for your own enjoyment. If your band gets to perform in public venues, have fun with it!
