They look for redness and induration due to a hypersensitivity to the tuberculin injected into your skin. The area of induration has to be carefully measured.

Depending on various criteria, a TB test is positive if there is 5, 10 or 15 millimeters of indurtion in 48 to 72 hours. Sound confusing? Put positive tb skin test on your search engine.

They look at your arm 48-72 hours after the PPD is injected. When they look they are looking for swelling or "induration " greater than 10 mm area.... In laymans terms, they are looking to see it if swells up/reacts. If it does react, it means that your body is sensitized to the PPD serum and thus has suffered an exposure to TB.
A positive skin test DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU HAVE TB, it just means that your body has been exposed to it. Also just FYI ...If you do have a positive skin test you should never be skin tested again.

If they gave you a short shot just under the skin on your arm, all you have to do is close your eyes and run your fingertips over the area of the injection. If you feel a bump, it is positive. If you do not feel a bump, it is negative. You close your eyes so you won't be influenced by a red mark which is more about injection site trauma than TB.

They told me it would feel like a kernel under the skin, and they didn't ask me to come back, just to mail in a card saying if the kernel appeared or not.

They look for a big red spot and a welt, I know I worked in a care home and had it done every year.
