well, there are two main reasons:
first, they want to mark their territory. when they rub up against you or if they actually put their paws on you and spread them widely (w/o scratching), they are literally rubbing their scent on you. that way, when you go out into the world, the other pets will know that you are spoken for. lol.
the other reason is that they are showing love. as a general rule, they don't hug, so this is the next best thing IMHO.

This is actually a big compliment in the cat world. They rub you because they consider you their territory. Also, it might be because they want something, like food or cuddles. Cats seem to have an impeccable sense of time, and often they will rub your legs and meow if it's their feeding time.

All cats.... even lions rub themselves against things. Said to be a territorial thing. Their scent remains on the item (in this case you) for other cats to stay off their turf. It is an awesome feeling to have a mature lion rubbing you up. Andrelinine rush bar none.

They feel than rubbing their bodies on things/people is a sign of affection and a mark of territory. But in other words, they might try to rub your legs if they want something (such as food).

Cats rub for several reasons. They want to show you that they like you, own you. They want your attention so you will feed them or rub they back. Mostly, it feels good and they want to share that feeling with you.

They have these "sensor" type thingys in their face and between their claws that give off a scent. They "mark" things with the scent they give off. Thats why they rub and thats why they claw things, to mark you as "theirs" ...isn't that awesome!
