Once the background check comes back, you have the job. Ask for the offer in writing though. You can only be sure of a job if you have an offer in writing.

You are hired unless they turn up something negative in your criminal background, credit history (if applicable), or employment history. They like to wait to formally offer a job until that is done to keep things as simple as possible.

As far as he is concerned, you have the job, but HIS bosses may want to know if you have ever been convicted of a felony, or drug charges or anything else. If your record is clean, you have a NEW JOB!!! Congrats and best of luck.

If you are clean, with a clean history congrats you have a new job. They are basically doing a check as to how reputable you are.
