Salaam,
Praying 5 times a day helps a devout Muslim become more closer to ALLAH(SWT) and give back in return from all those things that ALLAH has given us.
In order to pray, one must make ablution and purify oneself as well as the place prayer takes effect upon.
There are different numbers of rakats that must be done, some are obligatory, mandatory as well as optional.
Many people complain about praying 5 times a day. But think of it this way. Out of 24 hours a day, you give up 30 minutes of those hours to ALLAH, and that's all. Is that so much to ask for?
Namaaz is an essential part of a Muslim life. If one doesn't take these prayers within heart and complete them, he/she is not considered a Muslim. Namaaz is very significant, and at the call of Aazan, every Muslim peforms namaaz as intended. Hope this clears up any questions you may have.
Peace be upon you.
Jazak'ALLAH Khair,
-Ash
PS: Don't listen to anyone who tells you that it is related through Christianity. It's not.
SWT: Subhana'Wa'Ta'ala
PBUH: Peace Be Upon Him
SAW: Sallallahi Alaihi Wa'Salaam

Before the prayers you must be clean - you are required to dress according to the religion permitted rules. To cleanse yourself as a prayer preparation, you are required to perform ablution (udhu). Ablution is systematic way of cleaning yourself stating with your palms, nostrils, face, ears, head and feet.
There 5 prayers as follows
1. Al-fajr - A prayer in the morning at dawn (am 04:00 - 07:00)
2. Dhuhur - A prayer in the mid-day (pm 12:00 - 01:00)
3. Al-Assar - A prayer in the afternoon (pm 03:00 - 04:00)
4. Maghrib - A prayer during the sunset (pm 06:00 - 07:30)
5. Ishaa - A prayer during the night (pm 07:30 onwards)
All prayers must be performed using Arabic language. Each prayer has steps called rakaat (i.e. include prostration and standing) - the number of compulsory rakaat differ between prayers
Fajr has 2 rakaat
Dhuhr has 4 rakaat
Assar has 4 rakaat
Magharib has 3 rakaat
Ishaa has 4 rakaat.
For the mentioned prayers (salaat) you are allowed to add addtional rakaat called sunnat (non-compulsory) as you wish. We also add some zakaat for the Mosque which are also sunnah (non-compulsory)
It is very simple to learn and adopt believe me. It becomes part of your routine easily and you will never afford to miss the closeness you get to your creator. Allahu Akbar.

5 times prayers is obligatory on all Muslims. It's steps and versus are easy and it's same throught the Muslim world. But not many can perform it regulary. In certain countries you there many muslims but not Islam (vice-versa).
Ther are many who perfected e.g the Shahada,fasting,... extremely well but when it come to prayers their faith is so weak. They can jog for miles, climb mountains, etc.. but when the call for Farj Prayers in the wee hour of the morning they can't lift up even their blanket. You see prayer in Islam is one of our ways to communicate with God the Al-Mighty(which he has thought us through Prophet Muhammad(pbuh).

The five prayers are what was made obligatory for every Muslim to perform. Some people who don't like this, say why would God need you to pray to him five times a day? Answer is he doesn't but need that spiritual connection to him. Its the thing that calms the Muslim down and keeps him level. It teaches him disciple, organisation and cleanliness.
Below is the break down of which Prophet prayed which prayer and the times of the prayers are below this;
The daily prayers: The first to pray Fajr was Adam (upon him peace) upon him peace after he was taken out of heaven into the darkness of the world, in the middle of the night, he was overtaken by extreme fear. When dawn came and the light began to appear, he prayed to God out of gratitude.
The first one to pray Zuhur was Abraham when it was called out, “O’ Abraham your vision is true,” this was at the time of Zawaal.
The first one to pray Asr was Jonah/Yunis (upon him peace) when God freed him from the belly of the whale and the prayer was in the time of Asr.
The first one to pray Maghrib was Jesus (upon him peace), when Gibril informed him that his nation would call him one of a trinity then he prayed three units and this was after sunset.
The first one to pray Isha was Moses (upon him peace) upon him peace when he arrived on a path that left Madiyan, he had four problems and he prayed four units.
The first one to pray Witr was the Messenger of Allah Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him on the night of accession in the station of Gibril at the lote tree.
Fajr is before sunrise, Zhur is after the sun passes its zenith - midday, Asr - Is when the shadow of everything is double, Maghrib is after sunset and Isha is about 1-1.5 hours after sunset and Witr is right after.

The idea of praying multiple times through the day originated with christianity, not islam. Christians originally had eight prayer times:
Matins (during the night), sometimes referred to as Vigils
Lauds or Dawn Prayer (at Dawn)
Prime or Early Morning Prayer (First Hour = 6 a.m.)
Terce or Mid-Morning Prayer (Third Hour = 9 a.m.)
Sext or Midday Prayer (Sixth Hour = 12 noon)
None or Mid-Afternoon Prayer (Ninth Hour = 3 p.m.)
Vespers or Evening Prayer ("at the lighting of the lamps")
Compline or Night Prayer (before retiring)
This was, itself, derived from jewish custom (although the OT does not cite specific names and times). To the quibblers I will note that Vatican II removed Prime from the list to bring the number of prayers to the magical seven. Either that or to allow the pope to sleep in.

tell u the story of this:
god asked our prophet Mohammad to tell the Muslims
that they have to pray 50 times a day,and our prophet came down to tell us but he met prophet mosah and he told him to make them a bit lesser so he came back to god and asked to make it a bit lesser and he did and made them 45 and prophet Mohammad came down but also he met prophet mosah and make them a bit lesser
and so and so and so
until they came five times and prophet Mohammad met prophet mosah on the way back and prophet mosah asked to make them lesser but prophet Mohammad said that's enough.
