See if there is a restaurant supply outlet in your area. Bet you find them cheap there.

Look at bar tending supply places. A bud vase and a double tall shot glass are very similar in size and design.
www.discountmugs.com has some great glassware.
Also, if you are having a bar talk to the company about simply using theirs as the bud vases or the shot glasses for votive holders. After all, I would hope your guests aren't doing shots all night and you are already paying to rent those.

If you are looking for the small cylinder glass type bud vases, I got mine at wal-mart of all places! They were only 98 cents each, I almost bought them at Michael's Craft store for 1.98 each. They were the exact same bud vase too. If you are talking tall vases such as you would use as a centerpiece, try going to local florists, they will usually rent them inexpensively even if you don't use them for the actual floral arrangements.

Since your wedding is in October, maybe you could do like a fall carnival themed reception... with a buffet of carnival food like candied apples, funnel cake, roasted corn, hot-dogs, warm spiced apple cider, etc. These things could be made by friends and wouldn't be expensive to prepare. The decor would be easy as well... picnic tables with some hay bales along the wall (merely decor), and put balloons up and create a couple of carnival games for guest interaction. You might think this is strange, but it's a suggestion. In the very least, it's original and people would remember YOUR wedding over most wedding receptions they will attend in their lives. Good Luck!!
