Get a very sharp knife and cut the cream puff in half. In the bakeries they have nozzles to inject it. But at home it's fine to cut the cream puff, put the cream in with a spoon and put the top back on. It actually looks quite pretty, and everyone will know you made them yourself.

Actually, cream puffs have the tops split before they are filled with the cream. Because of the nooks and crannies, you might scoop out some of the inside of the "puff" before filling it. Then again, you can also make a small hole in the bottom and pipe the filling in, which doesn't exactly give you the traditional cream puff look. And don't forget the dusting of powdered sugar!

Cream puffs are tricky. You use a pastry bag with a small-ish tip and just practice, practice, practice. It takes a little practice and skill to get the feel of how much to fill it with without blowing it out.

Don't give up, just go slowly, and use a pastry bag!

Hi Heather,
I make cream puff often. If filling with a custard or cream, I use a baster.
Works real good. Just do it slowly.

i'd routinely use an icing bag with a undeniable nozzle i.e. one that has an prolonged skinny pipe linked to an icing nozzle. you in basic terms push the long end into the puffs and squeeze out the filling. No mess! it is likewise great for jam crammed donuts.

The way my mom used to do it was cut a circle out of the top of the pastry and then take all the strands of dough that were inside. This left a bowl. Then spoon in the filling and replace the top.
