hey man,
I would go to musiciansfriend.com and pick up a Fender 25R Frontman Series II Amp. The link to the page is listed below. You will also want to pick up a guitar tuner like the Intellitouch PT2 Tuner. Go to a local Guitar or music shop and ask if anyone gives lessons. If you don't do that you will want to buy a book or video that shows you chords and how to play them properly. One I recommend is (House of Blues Learn to Play Electric Guitar Beginner Book/CD/DVD) All these items i mentioned are availlable on musiciansfriend.com. Don't get discouraged and give up quickly, it takes it a little time. Start slowly and increase your time playing , your fingers will get sore and sometimes bleed if you play to long to quick. Good Luck.....

You can start with an electric or an acoustic. I like acoustics because they can be played anywhere. If you choose an electric, all you really need aside from the guitar is a cable and amp. For someone who's learning, you might want to get a small amp, like a Mouse and all of this can be played in a space as small as a closet, if that's all the space you have. I decent guitar can cost you as little as $150.00. I wouldn't spend any more than that, but you can upgrade later when you're sure you're going to stick with it. You can find out about lessons from the place that sells you the guitar, but if you don't care about reading music, there's that guy on cable OnDemand that shows you how to play famous songs. Also there are books that will teach you cords and songs without actually teaching you how to read.

Yes you do need an amp. Go to your local Guitar Center and tell him what you have, and ask what you will need, they are great with helping new players. You didn't say what kind of electric guitar you had, don't forget to tell them that . Good luck with your playing, It's hard at first, but don't give up too soon, it takes at least three months to get the callouses that you need to play without plain, so don't quite give it time ! it's the greatest thing that I ever did in my life, I loved it years ago and still do today, I hope this helped.

An Amplifier, and start with a small one and keep the volume down, No need to irritate the neighbors while your in the learning stage. I have 3 sons all of which play guitars. Hearing the windows rattle is not a good thing, Tends to irritate the natives, Don't cha know.

Get an amp. Peavey makes good smaller amps. You'd also be wise to invest in some good headphones -- the kind that really cup your ears and give you true sound. You'll also need the cords, the pedals for your sound and for heaven's sake, get yourself a whammy bar. Find a teacher for individual instruction. Good luck! yes you need an amp and a cord(plugs into guitar and amp). oh and strings if you dont have them. just get alittle practice amp, they are cheap about $100. the brand crate is ok for a begginer, and its cheap and has ok distortion. but if your just learning thats fine. later on when you get better, then you can upgrade to a better amp and then start messing around with effects(pedals)

you need an amp and the cord to the amp (you won't hear it unless it's plugged in, it's not an acoustic)

buy a cheap amp. Not to insult you, but the numbers are pretty high of people who quit learning an instrument so you don't want to invest in nice equipment until you're sure you enjoy it

Five things:

1 Electricity
2 An Amp
3 A pick
4 The will to learn to play
5 Good humored and/or deaf neighbors

guitar picks and a guitar strap? Also probably a book of beginner's sheet music (if you're a beginner) so you can learn some easy songs to start playing.

A small practice amp would be sufficient to start out with, and dont forget to pick up a cable too.
