Source: Observed a decal on his vehicle (I support the war/troops) He had two adult children with him. ( About 18 to 20 Yrs) I stated "Thank You" for supporting the war". He shook my hand. I told him I'm a Veteran from 1969. He smiled. Then I said "I want you to send you children to Iraq and make President Bush happy". His smile turned to a sour look like he was eating a fresh lemon. He said "I am a proud Republican and I support the war as long as other young men serve in the war. My children are going to college. My children have too much going for them". With that he looked at me with disgust and walked away. A true Republican?

Note: I did take the decal off his vehicle. I don't want him to live a lie.

Whether this is a true incident or not is immaterial. The fact of the matter is there are many flag waving Republicans who go on and on about how they “Support our Troops”, and how morally righteous this war is, but very few of them actually are willing to sacrifice their lives or the lives of their children for a cause that they promulgate over and over again to be noble.

What really makes them so different from the fanatical and hypocritical Mullah’s in the Middle East? These religious zealots speak ad nauseam about the bounties awaiting Islamic martyrs in paradise, and yet these religious clerics refuse to strap themselves to a bomb and get blown to smithereens. Why, if they so sincerely believe that this act will get them many carnal riches, including 72 bewitching virgins, wouldn’t these men of the cloth be more than eager to join those they preach to, in the act of self immolation? The answer is that they don’t really believe in this, but they know they have constituency that is so disenfranchised and enraged, that they will readily believe in such nonsense. In fact these followers are so blinded by rage that they cannot see the blatant hypocrisy that is right in front of them.

Republicans, especially the hawkish variety, fall into the same camp as the religious authorities in the Middle East . A few charismatic right wing leaders in the religious and political community speak of how honorable and patriotic this fight is in Iraq, but none of them really believe it, and that is why they send unfortunate and disenfranchised youth, so angered about their marginal place in this world, to fight for causes they have little understanding of.

I have always found it funny how those people who call themselves the enemy of the other (i.e. Republicans and Muslim militants) have so much in common.

About half of your story/question sounds true. Were you looking for a confrontation? As with most things, the way you approach a situation, your attitude and appearance go far in deciding how you will be treated. Taking the decal was a stupid, illegal thing to do. You are fortunate you did not pick the wrong individual to confront with your political views. All of us have freedom of speech, along with that comes responsibility for what we say. No, all Republicans are not the same, as all democrats are not the same.

I wish that we could get away from labels! Republican, Democrat, Liberal, Conservative. Bah, humbug. I am an American! I love my country, I served my country for 8 years in the Air Force. Unfortunately, I do not trust career politicians of any ilk. In my opinion, all Americans (no exceptions) should serve and be proud to do so. Then the people who make decisions for this country would know what it means to serve personally and they would know that someone that they know and love would have to carry out those decisions during their national service period.

Why would you have turned a nice thing like that into such a mean thing? Geez, looks like you were just wanting to pick a fight. I would've walked away in disgust from you too. This is a volunteer army. And people die in war. Thank you for your service in 1969 but that doesn't give you the right to say what you said to him.

Why should we believe this story when you start your question out with "why did this guy want to beat me up?", but in the details you never once stated where the guy said he was going to beat you up? In fact, you just say that he walked away without even saying anything that can even be mistaken for a threat.

Sounds like a hypocrite. What a jerk. You should have peed on his tires and spit in his face. I wish you wouldn't have shook his hand he did not deserve the touch of your heart.

Way to go my friend I am proud of you for being a true American. My heart is with you. If it wasn't for people like you his children wouldn't even of had the freedom to just go to school and make those chooses on there own.

because of the fact they want to hold directly to their little third gade pre-conceived notions, of reliable, vs, Evil.....or reliable vs. undesirable.......or, of their worlds......top vs. incorrect.........and that they have been taught gay is "incorrect"- Their clergymen rally against it, after which molest their altar boy infants as quickly as the sermon is over. They advance up believing being gay is faulty, and it will "wreck the social fabric of usa" to be gay. The have faith the militia will fall apart, if Gays are allowed to serve.........yeah, like there have been NO GAYS interior the militia for this reason a techniques! it is so laughable...........i do no longer understand how any sensible person can shield that place. while i became into interior the militia, Capt's Mast became right into a revolving door of subject concerns, as a rule revolving around martial affairs,, as you're saying, sexual harassment against the girls.....and different "promptly" sexual piccadilloes. i do no longer bear in mind a single case of two gays, male or lady, appearing till now the Capt. for their crimes.
