Absolutely. In each passage from the Bible we must look for the historical application (what was going on at the time), the doctrinal application (what absolute truths are being taught), and the devotional application (what do I need to do as a result).

Yes! More so today, as the world is far worse off than it was in Jesus time. In Jesus' day, the leaders oppressed, abused, and misled the people. Jesus astutely observed that the common people were "as sheep without a shepherd." (Mark 6:34) The same is true of mankind today. As a group and as individuals, we need leadership we can trust and respect. Does Jesus meet that need? Yes. Ghandi once stated that if the whole world would follow the teachings of Christ, and especially what is found at Matthew 5-7 with the Sermon on the Mount, there would be no wars or strife between tribes and nations. His entire life while on earth was an example for all who profess to be Christian. He did not involve himself in politics, stating that "My kingdom is no part of this world." He also taught his disciples to go and preach this kingdom and that he would be with them all the days until the conclusion of this system of things."(Matthew 28:19) It is this conclusion of this system of things that he gave signs to his followers then and now as to when those last days would be that we read in Matthew 24 & 25. In Mt. 25:13 he says, "Keep on the watch, therefore, because you know neither the day nor the hour." Jesus' true followers then would be doing just that, more so today than in the past as it will mean the fullfllment of Daniel 2:44, which says, "And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be brought to ruin. And the kingdom itself will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefnite."

In Matthew 5:17-20 Jesus said none of the 306 commandments from when given to Moses are to be forgotten. Even though some, having to do, have been dropped in having to do by the words of the Bible of Jesus. But it is a shame that so many will not even admit that there are 306 original Commandments. They must not even be looking.
But we still should do as Jesus taught, not as we like to pick out.
If I had not put the 306 here, could anyone know how many there really are?

Yes, Jesus words & teachings apply to the present day as much as, even more than they applied to the people of his days. As you know very well, Jesus Christ said the greatest of the commandments is love for God and love for neighbours. Are you not convinced that what is trying to tear the world apart right now is due to lack of love and forgiveness for one's neighbours? all the wars everywhere?????

Yes, I think it is a good idea to treat others as you would have them treat you.

I think helping the poor and the ill and outcast is a fine way to prove your love for the world around you.

Oh yeah, I believe that you should render unto Caeser ONLY that which is Caeser's.

And I definitely think the Pharisees (literal interpretors of the old testiments) need chasing out of the temple.

________

fireball - hate to break it to you, the ten commandments were not Christ's teachings.

Yes, his words and teaching are timeless...new each day that they are read.....

And the dietary laws are still in effect......that which is unclean do not eat......why is that such a difficult concept????

The sheet and all the animals dropping down from heaven was to point out to Paul that no MAN is unclean in reference to the taking the Gospel to the gentiles....the Jews thought that It was only for them...God's word is for everyone...

It did not change the dietary laws....unclean is still unclean...
The present day health, diseases, etc....God told us not to eat that which is unclean for a reason!!!

Would you eat bat, vulture, hawk, ground hog, squirrel, skunk??? These are unclean!! Yet people eat pig, clam, crab, lobster, shrimp, oysters...these are the clean up garbage crew...icky!!! coastal water treatment facilities filter the water through the sand, what is in the sand that removes the waste??shrimp, clams....
