Bassets and other hounds do tend to have a "houndy" odor because of their slightly oily coat.
That said, odor issues can also be associated with diet (poor quality or containing corn), ear issues (possibly infection or just not maintained), lips (sometimes the folds can get infected), skin problems or anal glands.
Your best bet is to have him carefully checked over by the vet to make sure there are no issues. Then make sure he is on a high-quality, corn-free diet. Regular brushing/grooming is good too.

Yes, Basset hounds have extremely long ears, they were actually bred that way so that when they smell things, the ears stir up the scent and make it easier to detect. Dogs, especially hound breeds because they are bred with amazing scent abilities, will find anything from shoes, to urine and feces, to dead animals, fascinating. Thier sense of smell is millions of times better than ours and to them, things with strong oders are very much appriciated, much in the same way we may study a complex painting or listen intently to a song. And unfortunatly, whenever a basset hound sniffs things, his ears are dragged through the item of intrest. This in combination with the fact that Bassets are attracted and drawn to smelly things, may be the reason they can get very smelly :)
As for the inside of thier ears, they should not smell that could mean they are infected, so check them often to make sure that they do not look red or full of black stuff, because then it means they need to be cleaned!

Ears and skin folds can harbor bacteria that makes a dog smell just plain funky. And Bassets have more than their share of both. Good grooming takes care of the problem.

I hadn't really noticed them smelling bad, but I haven't met that many.
Floppy ears are more prone to infection, and of course bassetts have the floppiest ears of all! Every bassett owner (and indeed, dog owner) should check their dog's ears regularly, and use ear cleaner regularly if necessary to keep them clean so that infection does not set in. I do not think any dog should smell if it is correctly bathed and free of any illness. Ears should certainly not smell if they are healthy.

sure they do scent detrimental at time. that's the ears. They drag them in each and everything, so as that they get an smell. they at the instant are not the cleanest canine in the international. yet they don't bark to any extent further than a doxie or a small yippy yorkie does.

Look into both of his ears and see if they have dirt/wax/gross stuff in them or if they smell bad. If they do he has an ear infection.
Make an appointment with your vet and he'll give you a solution to rub in his ears and you'll have to clean them out every otehr day.

because of the ear hanging down no air can circulate in there so they are prone to infections - so yes if the owner does not properly clean them they will often smell
dogs also have general body odor from grocery store food
