Depending on how you equip an Altima, it may not be a whole lot less expensive than a Maxima.
Go to Nissan's web site and use the "Build and Price" feature to equip each car as you like. You might be surprised at how little difference there is between the cars at the "well equipped" levels.
Karupt332 has some good advice.
As far as better, I would say different. The Maxima is Nissan's top of the line sedan and the Altima sits right under it.

My best advice would be go with the 2007 Altima... my main reason for saying this is within the next 2 years the Maxima will go through a full redesign and if you buy an 07 Maxima it will take a huge hit when the new Maxima hits showroom floors. Plus both of the vehicle have all the same equipment and I've had many customers tell me the ride is actually better on the Altima.

We own a 2005 Altima & really have no complaints. Back back to your question. The Altima versus Maxima, you have 2 different class types of cars. Altima is mid sized & you get more choices. You could go with a base model L-4 2.5 litre with loads of standard goodies for about 20K or move up to a 3.5 litre (same engine of the Maxima) for about 26K & change. Nissan will not sell a base 3.5 litre, you have to step up to the SE trim. They also offer a Hybrid that's claim to achieve over 40 mpg. Altima also recieved a complete make over last year. Maxima, it's starting to age, & Nissan will more than likely restyle the car about this time next year for 09. You don't get as many choices, Maxima comes in 2 trims one standard with loads of luxury goodies, and the top of the line will have your leather trim & more sports oriented. Maxima's are pricey starting for a new one in the upward 30K region. The smart money is on the Altima, more bang for your buck & more models with in the class to choose from. Good Luck

My wife drives an 05 Altima and we love it. She has the 2.5L with a fair amount of options and it was way less than the Maxima (don't go by website prices...only fools pay MSRP). Even though the engine is small, it has pleanty of power and tourque for everyday driving. There is very comfortable room for four large adults and trunk space is ok. On the highway, at 70 mph, she gets about 32 mpg. Around town she usually gets 28. We know someone who has an 07 maxima. For what they paid, we think the Altima is a much better value.

The maxima has more power, and it is more of a sporty car, but it will take a major depreciation hit when the new redesigned maxima comes out. The altima is pretty good, i know that for sure, they where both consumer reports reccomended by consumer reports. I think they are quite similar, it is really individual's choice.

I know that you can go to Kelley Blue Book online, and see what your Blue Book value is, but places like Carmax seem to price it based upon how much they can sell it at an auction, or estimate a resale price, and dock what they will give you so that they can make some money off your car. So, I don't know if that really helps you, but at least it's a little FYI. Love ya
