For Friday, the first practice session is usually around 9-10am so you'll probably want to be at the track just before then. As for Sunday, I usually get to the track around 10-10:30am. But since I live about 30 miles away I know all the backroads to avoid traffic. If you've never been there before you might want to shoot for around 9-9:30am just in case.
There is no on-track activity before the Cup race on Sunday. So you can tour the pits and watch the crews setup their pit boxes, see the cars get rolled out to the grid, stand in Victory Lane, and walk across the track near the start/finish line. Be sure to read the clothing restrictions for Fri & Sat as you have to have your legs and shoulders covered, and no open-toed shoes. Those restrictions are lifted for Sunday however.
And if your coming from the east, I suggest entering the parking lot at gate 8 of US-12. We got out of the parking lot in less than 10 minutes in June and were home in less then an hour after reaching the car. MIS has adjusted the outgoing traffic pattern this year and greatly helped the flow of cars out of the lots after the race.
Have fun and we'll see ya there.

After hitting up a few races at MIS (both NASCAR and IRL), I would suggest that you are at the track early, like 6-7 am. There is very little inbound traffic at that time, and the lot is big enough that you can breakout the bloody marys and the grill for some tailgating. Just don't plan on leaving the track right after the race if you are in a hurry, as the traffic is worse leaving than when heading in. We learned our lesson the first year and sat in traffic for over two hours before being able to go the speed limit.

Get there first thing in the morning on Fri... We got the same passes for Pocono and we are getting there at 9am on Fri morning.
We are allowed in the pits at 9 on Sunday until 1 hour before the cup race starts...
Yes the traffic is horrible, we are leave thursday after noon from Maine and staying in PA all weekend to beat the traffic, but leave as early as possible...
Bring your camera and a autograph book in the pits with you.

I went to MIS for both races last season. For the Fathers' day race, we got to the track, to late to check anything out, then it rain shortened. The August race, I think we got to the track around 10A.M. We did not have pit passes, yet even without the pits there is lots to see, and we still did not have time to check out everything. I recommend, that if you want to see everything that MIS has to offer, and the pit experience as well, get there when the gates open. You will definitely be able to keep yourself, well entertained, the whole time at the track. Maybe I will see you there. I am setting in between turns 1 and 2. I do not remember the exact seats.

Welll, I don't know about Michigan, but at Texas you need to leave like really really early.
The traffic is atrocious.
Also because once your at the track, there still are traffic jam ups everywhere, it's probably best to just camp out there if at all possible.
I learned the hard way at TMS. Three hours in line on the hiway while only 2 miles from the track.
Pit Passes Rule !!!!!!!!
Traffic jams drool !!!!!!!!!

if you can it is best to just stay in the infield all weekend. and get there Thursday. but if that is not an option for you. I advise you get there at least an hour or two before they start letting you in. traffic is going to be bad and the lines very long. there will be lots of things going on all weekend long in and around the track. make sure you hit the big area with all of the souvenir trucks. they don't just have things to buy but there is lots of free stuff and things you can do. Have fun!!! I'll be there in the infield TURN 4!!! YEAH!!!

August 12th!!! Go early and enjoy! You will find people there already. If it is your first race, you are in for a treat of a lifetime. If it isn't, then you shouldn't even have to ask. But, just so you know, EVERY race fan should go to Talladega!! Talladega rocks!!
