Get an emergency roadside kit, I got mine from www.collectionsetc. I'ts got jumper cables, a few tools,4 cresent wrenches, some screw drivers,pliers, electrical tape, a pair of knit gloves, extra fuses, band-aids,q-tips.an emergency light you can plug into the lighter,a siphon and a plastic bag to fill for water something else I can't remember it was only $14.00. pretty good deal huh? works in a pinch.

Frenchy gave you a great list.. if somewhat large (better have a BIG trunk).
To that I would add
1) Emergency seat belt cutter (keep in the car.. NOT the trunk for obvious reasons)
2) An old digital (not analog) cell phone that will use AA cells (or an adapter) along with the requisite cells. It does not have to be an active phone as long as it is digial (analog will be phased out soon). ANY cell phone.. active or not, can place 911 calls.. I put one in my kids' car in a small ziplock and made sure that both of them know it will work for emergencies.
3) Spare change (for a pay phone) and a list of important numbers (AAA, hospital id, etc...) also in that ziplock

Gallon of antifreeze
First aid kit (including an assortment of bandages, gauze, adhesive tape, antiseptic cream, instant ice and heat compresses, scissors and aspirin)

Flat head screwdrivers
Phillips head screwdrivers
Pliers
Vise Grips
Adjustable wrench
Tire inflator (such as a Fix-A-Flat)
Tire pressure gauge
Rags
Roll of paper towels
Roll of duct tape
Spray bottle with washer fluid
Pocketknife
Ice scraper
Pen and paper
Help sign
Granola or energy bars
Bottled water
and heavy-duty nylon bag to carry it all in.

if you live in the north you need a couple of flares, jumper cables, a bag of cat litter(pour some under your tires if you get stuck in snow), blankets, gloves, stuff like that.

I'd say you should have the basics. Knives, guns, ammo... things like this are important. you never know what kind of creep is going to stop for you if your car is broken down. keep safe.
