I'm not looking for anything expensive ($100-$200) because i only plan to take it up as a hobby for now. what are some good brands/models? & what kinds of songs/artists should i look at to learn to start playing? (preferably pop or rock).

Casio makes some decent cheap models. Try to find a keyboard that has at least 10 note polyphony and is touch sensitive. Weighted keys are important too.

I would go for a 100 dollar one from Tom Lee or noteworthy music. SOny and Toshiba brands preferable.

try a pawn shop you may pick up something good for a reasonable price
